14w27 added mutton drops from sheep (Which I like) and rabbits that drop rabbit meat (also good).
But now that so many mobs drop food in addition to other items (Ex: Chicken:Feathers, Sheep:Wool, Cows:Leather) makes Pigs automatically more useless be comparison.
You see, when pigs were added, they dropped the only items to heal hearts(hunger didn't exist back then) so they became a necessity to surviving. In the Beta 1.8 update, the game allowed chicken and cows to drop food. While chicken was weaker than pork, beef was the exact same as pork. So because cows dropped an item just as good as pork with an extra item, this made pigs somewhat redundant.
To add to this in 1.4 pigs now had to be bred with carrots, which can be painfully rare if you are far from a village. However pigs at that time did have one redeeming feature: You can ride them with a saddle. However this still was a weak reward in comparison because
A: You still needed carrots to control them.
B:This requires a saddle, which is only spawned in dungeons, temples, and mineshafts. Which can also be a pain to look for.
THEN CAME 1.6. Horses were added, which could be ridden WITHOUT a carrot and can have armor on them. While they still required a saddle they are faster and more controllable than a pig, thus weakening the pig once again. At this point the one use I have for them is killing them without worrying about breeding.
But in a game where breeding is necessary to keep animals alive in plentiful numbers, using the easier item(wheat) to obtain to get an item that can do the same thing as another(beef) with extra stuff(leather) from a different animal(cows) makes more since than using a potentially rarer item(carrots) to obtain an item that can do the same thing as beef(pork) while not dropping anything else.
How has the pig become so weak? Why did this happen?
Ok, rant over. Write you thoughts/ideas down below.
I think it's more a case of too much food now, more than anything.
Pigs can still be used for short distances - horses for long distance journeys, and at least now - once you get a carrot getting more isn't a problem once a farm is established. Getting back to the food subject however, I don't even eat pork, beef or chicken in-game. Which gets back to the point of too much food, even bread and mushrooom soup I hardly use now - it's mainly a diet of jacket potatoes, carrots and melons. Cookies when I can be bothered to make them.
In a food respect, they can be redundant, but it's up to the player if they make it that way IMO.

They could give them the ability to find truffles which could be used as a potion ingredient. Other than that, the only things I could think of are just additional foods like bacon or ham sandwiches.
I don't really see the situation as too terrible though, its kind of nice to have an animal that you can just use as a food source without worrying about anything else.

Yep. Steak is my go to food due to healing 8 points of hunger & having high saturation. Chicken is next in line, due to the chicken generator I built a while ago (Yes, generator. It pumps them out too quickly to be called a farm).
Also, new to the updated forum. What does the reply function do? When I use it I don't see any indication regarding who I'm replying to.

The pig's value has more or less been the same. Cows have always been superior food stock because of the bonus leather drop. The value of pigs spiked when the carrot on a stick made riding a pig practical. But it was almost immediately overshadowed by the arrival of horses.
As far as the new snapshots pushing pigs further into obscurity I disagree. While sheep do now drop mutton, I'm not going to go around killing sheep, they're still better for continued wool production. As for rabbits, other then killing a few to collect the feet for potions, their not worth it for leather or food. Pigs are still the 2nd best animal food option, but once you get a cattle ranch set up, their's no real point to killing other animals for food.
So ya, pigs are, imo, of the same value they've essentially always been. This new update is not going to change how I view pigs.
I think pigs have become useless besides the fact they if they were gone, minecraft would lose something, because pigs are absolutely the best animal for some reason. They are just beautiful. Adding truffles is genius, check it out in suggestions! Check out my little banner thing below, it adds something for the pretty pink fat mobs!
It doesn't bother me either way, but what if pigs had a chance to have twins or triplets (litters?) from a single breeding? Real pigs can have a lot of babies, so it's a bit odd they only have one. Might make them more economical as a food resource.
The only other pig products I can think of are rendered fat/lard or bristles, and I'm not sure there is a point to either of those right now. Truffle-hunting or something similar is also an interesting idea.
Why do pigs' usefulness need to be on par to the other mobs? Pigs are fine as they are, they are still useful as they were.
Due to the cow's and the sheep's usefulness increasing does not necessarily mean that pig's usefulness has decreased in any way. They're still the same, unless Mojang did some nerfing to the pigs along the way.

I don't think pigs are completely useless. Yes, I do think people have less intentions to find pigs breed them and lead them to your farm. But I think it's nice to have pig farms as a trophy.
But, I would love if Mojang gave cooked porkchop more saturation or made it heal more hunger points.

I think they don't need anything more. There are loads of pigs in one world. All you need is food (basically) to survive. Also, we have enough things in Minecraft. Why add more to mobs? Just make new ones! That is why I think pigs are useful.
Most animals (if not all) are much more useful than the pig. Cows drop leather and meat. Chickens drop feathers and meat. Sheep drop wool and meat. Horses... well they just drop leather. Bunnies/Rabbits drop meat and hide AND A POTION INGREDIENT.
Cows are for leather, chickens for feathers, sheep for wool. horses for leather, and bunnies/rabbits for brewing.
So to even it out, I think the pig's unique purpose would be specifically food. Maybe have them drop some pig hide or bacon in addition to porkchops, with bacon just as effective as porkchops?

Sire I inquire as I do with most, but do you mean to gloat? For is it truly such a tire to reply to the host with but a simple QUOTE?
