It's just pixels, I can't see an issue with it when you can already eat cows, pigs and chickens (and zombies). I've kept fish as pets and cared for them for years, but I have zero problem eating fish.
Also, from a more global perspective, not every culture lives in a place with arable farmland or resources to never eat meat. If you live by the sea, you have to eat stuff from the sea; if you live somewhere that is ice and snow 80% of the year and you can't get imports, good luck being a vegan, etc. There's nothing wrong with not eating meat if you're able to and want to, but for economic and logistical reasons not everyone is able to do that. Therefore it's silly to be judgmental across the board of what people eat to survive. Rabbits are very economical to keep and breed and they're not an unusual food source at all. It's just not as common in some regions. I don't know why people have to bring their personal cultural prejudices or discussions of racism into this anyway, it's irrelevant.
It had to realization that the developer is planning to have rabbit hide, rabbit meat, rabbit's foot, and mutton.
I am passionate about the idea of having rabbit hide into leather, as horses have the same characteristic. This also allows leather armor easier to obtain in the start; however, if each rabbit were to drop 1 item of rabbit hide, assuming 100% chance of drop, you would need to kill 100 rabbits in total for full leather armor.
There's also the topic of the rabbit's foot, traditionally a symbol of luck. It is fair that the potion of leaping will finally be integrated in survival. I assume it is a rare drop, therefor more grinding for the mob.
Mutton. It's about time, don't you think? I've never found myself in more desperate need of food when there are no pigs or cows withing a 100 block radius of me. Yet, there are sheep. Useless sheep in this time of need. Now, sheep will be rather more useful than they ever were before, and that's a good thing.
Rabbit meat is quite the disturbing one of them all. This idea could be as morbid as cooking cats ever will be. Rabbits are domestic animals, like dogs and cats. Why should they be treated differently, in a rather horrifying way? This lacks the diplomacy it deserves to those who nurse rabbits, who take care of them day after day, only to realize that you are able to cook them, and eat them.
That's not all. What happened to bats? Why can't rabbits be another mob for the aesthetics? I know, it is hard to resist not having rabbit's foot, but utilizing rabbits as a food product?
I've never seen such an excruciating aspect of the game. There's rotten flesh, but zombies are not domestic unlike rabbits, cats, and dogs are.
I do not, in anyway, oppose the addition of certain drops. However, I do believe that some are them are rather dull, and predictable. I do believe the developers should tone down the incentive of killing these entities, up to a point where we won't have to see automatic grinders of them.
I agree. As someone who has three as pets, I find they make much better and more intelligent companions than my dog. I'd prefer one of the following;
Since Mojang's added in mutton in addition to this new mob and its drops, that they'd also make wolves and cats drop the respective meat and hides.
Make the rabbits aesthetic pets, or simply drop nothing. (the preferable option)
It's not a game-breaker for me, even though it's slightly offensive (yes I'm aware of what goes on in reality), but I never intend to use these mobs for anything but pets anyway. I like that the drops aren't guaranteed, and somewhat inefficient, and they included the Toast skin, which shows they have unoffensive intentions, but still the amount of drops, well it could be seen as Mojang encouraging the farming of the mob.
I don't feel any guilt for, say, accidentally pushing my tamed wolf into lava or something, or killing some of my cows for the leather, because Minecraft is so visually and thematically removed from reality that one generally does not make the empathetic connection, so it'll likely be similar for these anyway. It's probably the same for the majority of players.
Beyond personal preferences, there's the mechanics. Did we really need another food item and associated mob? Really? There's plenty of easy-to-get food as-is. I don't mind the mutton showing up, since people have been asking for that for a long time and it gives an established mob an extra but probably emergency-only use, but two new food items is a bit much.

Rabbits have been raised for food long before they were raised as pets and traditionally, in many cultures are every bit as much a food animal as a pig or chicken.
Yes, I have had rabbits as pets. No I'm not bothered by the rabbits in game having food drops. For that matter I have known people who had pet chickens. The chickens were affectionate and very friendly. That doesn't mean I will get outraged by chickens being food in this game or real life. If it bothers you, don't kill them in your game, you aren't forced to. And I'm quite sure no real rabbits are harmed by anything people do to rabbit shaped clusters of pixels.
I don't have any problem with rabbit meat in the game. They might be more common as a pet than the other Minecraft food animals but they are still a fairly common food source all over the world. I also don't see how you can accept rabbit hides but not rabbit meat. People who dislike the idea of eating cats/dogs are almost always going to be just as against the idea of making clothing out of them too. If anything, killing rabbits and wasting the meat would be even worse.
I am sure someone pointed it out but I'm going to say it in the event that they haven't:
You can break rabbits into two types: Wild and Domestic.
I don't know where you are from and since you think rabbits are only domestic, I assume you have never seen a wild hare/rabbit. Trust me they are completely different things. Living in Ontario you could clearly tell if a rabbit was owned by somebody just from the look.
Seriously, Google "Wild Rabbit" "Wild Hare" then "Domestic Rabbit".
You kill and eat wild rabbits, you pet and love domestic rabbits. It is literally the difference between wolves and huskies. One rabbit will claw and try to bite while the other is... well it is domesticated.

Overall, I don't mind the new additions.

Also eat rabbit, they are delicious.
