Part of the allure of Minecon is the interaction with other people. If all you wanted to do was attend panels, then the new format is perfectly fine. But if you want to meet Jens and the rest of the Mojang team, you're out of luck.
I've been saying for a while now that they should have multiple Minecons held around the world every year. This would give everyone a better chance of being able to attend. What they are doing with Community Events and partnering with MineFaire, BlockFest and the other one kind of accomplishes this goal. Here in the U.S. we still have two more MineFaires scheduled for this year. The next one is in Washington DC on August 19-20, and the other one is in Philadelphia PA on October 14-15.
I can see what they are doing, and I think they are on the right track. I can also understand the disappointment that people are going to have at not being able to attend "in person" an official Minecon. We'll have to see how it works out in the end.
What are the pros and cons that you can think of for doing Minecon this way?

personally i was hoping for europe. also the cons of doing this is that mojang dosnt have to do any work
I was waiting in the hope that something else might come out as it still seems a bit confused and unclear.
I think we all knew Minecon2017 was not happening, they left it far to late to announce a location, but this whole thing of 'its a 90 minutes live stream with some other stuff we cant announce yet.. maybe an event in London' smacks of a last minute panic thing slapped together in the rush.
I've been to every Minecon so far and I became disillusioned with the whole process long ago. In my 'professional life' I do a lot of business conventions, and those things are organized to an inch of their life, so I know it's possible to plan things years in advance, I just got my tickets to an event in 2019!
Don't worry tho, there will be some merchandise to buy.. it's not Minecon without the opportunity to flog you a lot of Plastic Tat.

Well again, thats kind of proving my point, theres several unofficial things happening on the same day, but no details as those of yet.
Mojang are epicly terrible at organization, but the total silence followed by this 'announcement' with so much vagueness is a new low.
yeh its kind of funny actually
