I read a decent amount of the posts here, and I do agree that the whole idea of name-changing could cause some problems, but this is my opinion:
Don't sweat it, this isn't final. Plus, team Mojang is collectively smart, and they'll find a good way to work this out if they want to allow us Minecraft users to change our usernames. Also, I do like one of the ideas that I saw a few times: You can change your name once for free, and after that, you will need to pay a small fee to change it again.
If accounts were assigned Player ID numbers that you could use to ban people we could make multiple characters on an account which would be nice. It would just change things so when an admin wants to ban a player it would have to save a ID number to the black listing instead of a user name. (you'd still do /ban Griefer_Griefson but instead of banning just the name it bans the account ID so no matter the name that account cannot join the server)
Maybe to view a ID number you'd just have to hold Tab-Shift to show the numbers in place of players name.
I'm sorry, but I despise this idea of changing names. Sure, I regret my name, and more so down the track because I chose it from what bullies used to call me, but honestly let's look at the pros and cons of this.
Pros:
1. You can have a cool new username.
Cons:
1. Server Owners can't ban you if you change your name.
2. It is morally confusing for people to distinguish you.
3. It's going to cause many problems down the track, whether system overloads at Mojang, or debates of innapropriateness.
This is why I don't condone this new idea Jeb brought to mind, it's just plain horrible and will lead to a new level of griefing.
This will make greifing go to Level 10 from Level 3 and I absolutely agree. Sure, it would be cool to chang eyour name, but I'm a server owner and a co-owner of two servers and I would hate to ban a greifer then have to reban him 2 minutes later. I completely agree.
I'm guessing no-one here uses Steam? On Steam, merely changing your display name won't evade you from a V.A.C Ban.
Why would changing the display name of your Mojang account be any different? As long as servers are set up in a way so
that using the /ban command will ban the account name, changing your display name shouldn't allow you to evade any bans.
Yeah, they should have an Account Title (in my case, Milo), so this would be your profile name. Then, you could change your IGN name and when server owners ban someone they ban the account title.I know this is completely out of topic, but I'd like nicknames in Vanilla. I go on a vanilla server and everybody calls me "cafe" and I want them to call me "milo" so like enicknames that dont have the little ~ thing.I know this is completely out of topic, but I'd like nicknames in Vanilla. Mollstam confirmed you'll have an ID. So, it means if you are banned in one server with your name, you can change how many times you need, it will continues to be banned forever.
There is no reason for this. There are already mods that allow everyone to have nicknames as display names. It would only add a bonus for trolls and griefers. Even if they do use some kind of unique ID to make banning and whitelisting easy, unless people can see it (which would make usernames kind of irrelevant), it would be simple to trick, troll or grief the average player. And if buddylists are implemented, friends on there changing their names makes things confusing.
Just put up a warning at signup that your username will be what is displayed when you play. People that want to change their name can already get a new account.

However, Steam has other reasons a person would want to avoid trolling/griefing/etc. If you get banned from one VAC server you get banned from all of them, rendering some games unplayable. If you get banned from several servers you risk getting banned from Steam completely, losing complete access to all your Steam games. With Minecraft, you can get banned from every server in existence, but still play Minecraft not only single player but on the multiplayer servers that come into existence the next day.
I think we should all get a free name change cause my username is xzxxxzxx and that was my old username and i want to change it to my new username for my youtube jacobisanangel, and plus so some people get un-banned, first of all if they were banned they prob forgot about the server in the first place, and if they didn't, i think we can deal with some trolls and griefers if its for a new name change for those people who aren't bad and made it to some stupid name since they didn't think it would count for alpha (not me in particular but i have heard thing). i mean mine is only 2 letters, and i would like it to match my youtube name for when i become famous everyone will know its me on there server. So I am very thumbs up with the idea at hand and think its only fair and see the prob with griefers as a minor not a major, the only main prob i see if servers recognize usernames for moderators and admins, and not ips or something, then they would have to re-op people. (btw it would be nice if you guys could sub to my youtube jacobisanangel so i could make more vids :D, much appreciated)
Well, this might cause lot of problems!
Bans, got banned change your name....
My suggestion is, everyone has unique id, from this id you get banned/OPed etc... Username can be changed any time.
Well admins could read your username and ban that.
I totally agree with you. Just think of all the noobs that would be changing their names all the time just for the hell of it! Although I think that for special cases (like people that accidentally put in their real name) should be able to change once.
For some people, this is already a problem, for instance, my username is too long to enter on a sign, so I can't use any economy mods, as they all require you to put your screen name on the sign.
I must admit that the idea of name changing would be problematic for server owners/admins/mods. However, I'm sure that Mojang could make it so that banned people would stay banned, even if they change their name. I'm not sure how, exactly, though. One way you could enforce this (personally my least favorite), would be to make them pay to change it (10, 15 US dollars, maybe). Another would be using something that stays constant to remember their first username and the servers they were banned from.
Are you all so blind that you can't see that this would just be an improvement and nothing more?
• Using unique IDs for separate people means that banning wouldn't be "impossible"
• Having to "relearn" your friends IGNs is just tough luck; you shouldn't really be worried about having to do that
• Why would you even want to pay more money than minecraft already costs? There are systems everywhere that permit display name changes but you still have to log in with the old username. They let you do it every 30, 60, or 90 days, but don't charge you "a dollar or two" to change it. Why would that even be a consensus???
The things that are being proposed in this topic are ridiculous. For something as simple as a name change.
I disagree. I chose my Minecraft name without thinking. Not only would my new username be "cooler", but it would be more professional for the position I'm in.
YES.Name changes would be awesome,I Thought megasonicking would be my log in ,But it was my ****ing user name ,I Shall change my name to Kagamine_Len_Kun1243

I only see it every 30-90 minutes!
