how about instead of changing your "username" you change your "screen name", that way there would be no ban evading and bans would be assigned to the username rather then the screen name
anyone else think of that?!

One fine day in the middle of the night
Two dead boys got up to fight
Back to back, they faced each other
Drew their knives and shot each other
A deaf policeman heard the noise
And came and killed the two dead boys
how about instead of changing your "username" you change your "screen name", that way there would be no ban evading and bans would be assigned to the username rather then the screen name
They should make it so you have a username, and a screen name. You could change your screen name, and other people would see that, but your username for your account would be what servers and such use to ban you.
Thank Notch!
I HATE my username. I've got the name colinwcrowley11 and that isn't even my name because I bought my account secondhand. I just want to be MrCorn like I am everywhere else!
We should't worry about the post-update problems (if it does ever happen), its Mojang's job to do so, not ours. If Mojang decides to allow name changes, of course they will come up with a new way for bans to work, specially now that they are working with Bukkit ( which I would think probably have a bit more dedication to servers and everything related to it).
It is possible to ban people by IP address, not just by username. This tends to solve some of the problem unless the person goes to another computer or changes their IP. If this happens, I don't think anything could stop them since they could also go to the lengths of buying another Minecraft account and playing at a friend's house. I do agree that it would be annoying to keep track of who is who though and I think that the system could overload from the constant changes. Inappropriateness existed before though, and this makes it possible to make your username more appropriate if you were being stupid when you first signed up.
That's true, but maybe it shouldn't show changed to the servers admin because, if he gives "player x" a warning, saying if you come back, I will ban you or something, but not actually banning the person yet, "player x". Could change there name to "player y". And go back on the server. Without the admin knowing it was really, "player x".

They Should Do What Microsoft Does on Xbox Live, You Can Choose a Username & Change It Once In The Future & After You've Changed It Once You Can't Change It Again For Free (Small Fee - £2.50).
Why was almost every word capitalized?
I see this so often

If it pops up into your mind, build it or post it. I have no idea why I do this.
I think you should be able to change your name once. Only one time. So you can't change name multiple times and go back in servers you were banned. And you shouldn't be able to change your name to a name thats already taken. I think that would eliminate a lot of problems.
I'm guessing no-one here uses Steam? On Steam, merely changing your display name won't evade you from a V.A.C Ban.
Why would changing the display name of your Mojang account be any different? As long as servers are set up in a way so
that using the /ban command will ban the account name, changing your display name shouldn't allow you to evade any bans.

AMENPlus its a great way for people who have numbers in there name to change there name without numbers. I have numbers in my name and it annoys me-.-

Yes. Another solution, you can only change your name once. If you want to change it, you;ll have to pay

With Bukkit, there are already plugins to change the nicknames/ screen names of players? Without Spout, the nickname shows up in the chat. With Spout plugins(allows graphic adjustments to Minecraft without client mods), the nickname shows up as the username when you look at the player.
Well I must admit, there would be a lot of problem to fix from changing people's usernames but I know that a LOT of people would like a different username to the one they currently have.
To prevent people from changing to inappropriate or copyrighted (etc) usernames, my idea would be to have each new username checked somehow before becoming the new username for the Minecraft account.
Also, it could be made so it changes the in-game name ONLY, and the actual account keeps the same name that it started with. This could help to stop people from trying to get into a server they have previously been banned on. Basically you log in/connect with your original username, but in-game it shows a new name.
Just an idea... probably not going to affect anything...
Yea, hopefully the spammers stop spamming soon about their username
I think maybe you should pay a small price for this feature. Like 2 dollars or something.
Naw, make it like Steam. Have user "profiles" which show the face of the character in question, their current name and a list of names they have used in the past, also, acheivments.
@Ging_Ning: Maybe have username changes limited to 2 or 3 times per user, no one should NEED more than 2 or 3 changes in their life. I mean, yea you grow older, and you go from wanting "Sugarprincess2082823" to wanting to be something less infantile, but after a certain point, your tastes change signifigantly less often.
Oh God no. PLEASE do not do this. My server has painstakingly maintained an enormous list of banned rule-breakers for over a year and a half; please don't make that a totally futile enterprise after all the work we've put into it.
If Jeb is going to do this, he ought to separate original login names and display names like so many other games do these days. That way people can still change their names but stay banned from the servers which they have abused.

hmmmm it would be a great thing to happen! and i dont see a bad reason for it BUTT for greifers....all they have to do is go change there user name and bam! there back on a server griefing because the logs saw the greifers name before the change is the one banned, not the newer name!
anyone else think of that?!

So I really don't care about changing my name, this name kind of took over other account's names.
I have no idea why I do this.

That is a really good idea! Thumbs up to that.
