Just wanted to get more attention to this video in the hope the devs finds it:
I didn't make it but completely agree to what it says and it's one of the most mindful and useful video I saw in years about the design problems of the game, instead of complaining he has done an amazing analysis of the situation
Copper could really be great but as he says in the video it needs to find a use, to me the best whould be to make iron harder to find and present a lower levels and making copper into a tool material.
I like the idea of eliminating wood tools and making stone and copper digging possible with bare hands at a faster speed (close to the wood Pickaxe, you cut trees with your bare hands anyway), this whould be also great for all the times when your pickaxe break and you have to slowly dig barehands to return safely to the surface!
The most played part of the game is basically from when you have iron tools to when you have an enchanted diamond set because you focus on exploration and construction but you still have stuff to upgrade
having copper tools would be great because you don't have to find iron to feel safe to search the right location for your base, you are free to take your time to prepare for dangerous missions underground to find iron and cave systems to build even further your base, maybe you like to build close to a village or a specific biome, right now you need to spend a good amount of time in a temporary base untill you have a set of iron tools and armor, in years of play I never used leather armor and it whould also be awesome to have a use for that!
So in short:
No more wooden tools, Copper as a new set of tools and Iron harder to find so that you don't have to grind at the start of the game, you have more Freedom from the get-go and leather armor have a good use!
Now that I think about it with a slower but less demanding progression it whould also be great to be able to craft Enchanting tables with a crystal instead of a diamond and without the use of obsidian (or having obsidian dig-able with an iron pickaxe).
Before having a set of diamond tools there's no good use for lapislazzuli and enchanting non-diamond tools is a waste, it whould be great to unlock enchanting after getting Iron tools but before starting digging for diamonds so that you can have enchanted gear and explore dangerous places like underwater and dungeons without having to grind for diamonds to feel safe about it!

You only cut trees with your hands at the start though, you idea in the first two paragraphs is quite frankly ridiculous. You can feel save with stone tools until you get iron, which isn't hard. Even then one of the first and foremost things you should do with it is a shield. we don't need copper tools when the progression of wooden>stone>iron is already enough.
You shouldn't go into a really deep cave (1.18+) anyway unless you are prepared - basic shield, food, torches ideally, even if that's some food, or some/a few torches.
There should be a grind. Some players will just trade and trade and get a full set of diamond armour in a village right from the get-go, which to me is even worse and I'm glad they're nerfing villagers. It feels like a lot of players want everything handed them on a plate these days instead of having to actually work for it and earn it. That's not even mentioning going around wrecks and ruins collecting from the beggining as a way to get ahead. (Unless speedrunning.)
I actually agree with the video in most other parts though, especially in extending redstone use, an area where I am not so great in. Maybe encouraging more people to use redstone in the process. The only wooden tool you intially need is a pick anyway given how easy it is to get stone.

You exactly made my points, the idea is particularly true in the first two paragraphs, for example wood tools are so underused you might as well discard them and make the life of players easier with a faster start, of course you feel safe with stone tools what I mean it's feeling safe starting exploring the map to find a place for your base, I usually travel quite far from spawn to find it and traveling at night is dangerous enough to needs iron gear.
You opened the part of the discourse I didn't talk about, grind is good and you need to have it in minecraft, what I'm talking about it's a more meaningful progression where the grind feel more earned and getting iron is something you need to work for, with copper tools you would be safe enough to start exploring to construct your base but to get iron you have to dig deeper into caves systems to find it and putting leather armor to use, personally I like on doing that sort of stuff close to where I settle with my base so I really focused about that but really I'm dissatisfied with the grind too
Think about it the best part starts from diamond to enchanting to netherite, from starting the game to diamond you basically go asap iron all from a temporary base and at least to me it feels like homeworks

What I find annoying about copper is that you find so much copper ore when mining and not knowing what to do with it, but also not wanting to ignore it, since it's an ore. Every miner knows, you just have an urge to mine every ore you see
Not knowing what else to do with copper, I started using it as building block (ep #5 minute 25:22)

I ignore copper. It looks dusty and I don't care for it. But I've also been ignoring redstone for ages because it's just lighting to me, and I often ignore lapis emerald and even gold at times.
Everybody is kicking and screaming about whether or not you have knockback or fire aspect (I use both) and I'm over here wondering if you've repaired it at all before mending was applied. Cuz that'll do it https://vidmate.onl/
I think giving copper a use would be a great addition to the game. I've modded in copper wares (as in download a mod lol) like armor and tools. I wish the devs would add copper armor and tools officially to the game.

Time to apply Sharpness IV to Minecraft.
If you play by some predefined rules about not terraforming the land, then the experience becomes pleasantly slower and more gradual.

Well, it used a pronoun incorrectly so it's just a video thought of a bit hastily.
