So I know that you can sell skins, worlds, resourcepacks etc in bedrock edition (marketplace) but can you sell skins, resourcepacks etc in java edition where there is no such thing as the marketplace.
I'm just curious as if that would even work and if it works, if you are even allowed to do that.
You can sell minecraft skins, resource packs, etc. in Java Edition but you would have to do it using external means of payment and communication (discord servers and PayPal for example). Selling skins specifically, though, it would have to be a custom skin service as if you try to sell a bunch of premade skins, someone is gonna buy them and distribute them for free through discord or by applying them to his account and letting ppl download it through NameMC.
The EULA forbids making money off of "downloadable content", "add-ons/mods", or "parts of the game", which presumably includes skins and resource packs, as well as worlds and data packs, since you are basically just modifying the default version of the game's files, and otherwise they require the full game in order to be used:
The one major rule is that you must not distribute anything we've made unless we specifically agree to it. By "distribute anything we've made" what we mean is:
give copies of our Game to anyone else;
make commercial use of anything we've made;
try to make money from anything we've made; or
let other people get access to anything we've made in a way that is unfair or unreasonable;
unless we specifically agree to it. And so that we are crystal clear, "the Game" or "what we have made" includes, but is not limited to, the client or the server software for our Game and includes Minecraft and Minecraft: Java Edition on all platforms. It also includes updates, patches, downloadable content, add-ons, or modified versions of a Game, part of those things, or anything else we've made.
The exception is where Mojang specifically allows it - the Bedrock Edition-exclusive "marketplace". I can't say for sure if ads or donations which do not give any perks are allowed (e.g. Optifine is all but selling capes, which are doubly forbidden as only Mojang is supposed to give them out, even for free); they only mention being able to indirectly monetize videos via ads, but I'd assume so given how many modders accept donations.

Nothing below should be construed as "legal advise";
for that one needs needs a legal beagle duly certified in the appropriate jurisdiction[s ].
What I was thinking of with regards to NFT was "Hand Crafted Products" under the terms. Whether or not an NFT would qualify is the question….
qv. https://www.minecraft.net/en-us/terms
[With the NFT avoiding running afoul of the 'mass produced' prohibition, a graphic file which could serve as a skin might then be permissible.
How much the precedent of legal kits – the assembly of which results in an illegal 'switchblade' might apply – would seem to be worth considering.
It would be passing strange if MS/Mj was able to claim ownership of any graphic simply because it could be used as a skin.
For an example closer to gaming, consider the existence of fine-scale modeling "superdetailing sets" which comprise parts intended to replace those provided in a 'vanilla' kit with different (and generally higher quality) piece; this would seem to be analogous from swapping out the genreic Steve/Alex for a customized MC skin.
A good part of the eventual answer to this question is – most unfortunately – on how litigatious various parties are [and even worse the depth of their pockets.]
I'd be surprised if there was enough money in the java market (given how available free skins are) to make it worth anyone's time as a business (much less if litigation was needed), and I have no interest myself (beyond intellectual curiosity), but the advent of a new texchnology (like NFTs) does make for interesting question….]

Both the Java and Bedrock edition are licensed proprietary code , it gets complicated with the java version , like you said no store to sell at. Everything is a derivative work and even though you create a mod , texture-pack, as soon as its in any minecraft format , microsoft has got you in a license violation if you profit from it. Unless you live in a communist country and never plan on traveling to any part of the rest of the world, don't try and profit without explicit license permissions from all software companies used in the creation of your project .
Java EULA says you can't. But creator donations I assume is the way to go about it not the works themselves. Whatever Curseforge or other sources offer with their author programs.
But Bedrock has the marketplace which is filled with purchasable 'community' and official skins/resource packs and worlds so it's a bit backwards I think/strict to Bedrock as the money making option. Larger userbase, locked down heavily monitored (I assume even though basic worlds exist that Youtubers have shown) but you can get money from it there but can't Java.

Chaos ensues... Do not let it consume everything
ok thanks!
no problem!

Particularly for skins, you might look into the various NFT [Non-Fungible Token] services…
Exactly how this would be viewed in terms of the EULA needs a lawyer (at least). [NFTs did not exist when the EULA was written.]

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
