I'm pretty sure it should be easier to find desert temples now that they are on the surface, although it does take away some fun. But they were definitely hard to find before.

Apparently in the latest snapshot they're often partially buried.
i am trying to get flying working on creative but no luck so far. i am using win 11 on my pc. i don't know if i can start with creative and then switch to survival after i find a temple. i am using snapshot 4 now.
switched to the xbox and crap, i can't fly with it either in creative. i used to be able to but there must be changes to the setup so i can't fly now. i want to fly and see the layout with the changes and mountains etc.
finally got flying in xbox and java. so interesting.
I think splitting this update into 2 parts was a mistake. It's made both halves feel less impressive.
I remember when the Nether update dropped, and we first stepped foot into the nether and BAM we were hit with this insane new atmosphere! But part one of caves and cliffs didnt feel that way, just new blocks with no context for them to exist. Maybe part 2 will be more exciting?
I think they should have waited until the entire update was complete and told us all to just be patient.

The Nether update is not even remotely close to the same scale as 1.17/18. Situation is different, an update like this needs to be polished, not just put on a show.
This update might as well be named "The update that ACTUALLY changed the world!"
don't know what is going on with snapshot 5. seems like it doesn't remember what i did. cut down an oak and then started to cut a birch and all of a sudden was looking at the oak tree again, partially cut down... was mining and found iron and every time i dug out an iron ore, it jumped back in and i had to dig it again. have to find out where i make a report on this.

That's generally due to latency between client and server. Are you on single or multiplayer?

I get that.
I am saying I think they should have held the first half of the update and instead released them BOTH in december (or whenever the 2nd half actually releases.)
It's pretty subjective but I think the moss, and everything else, would have been more impressive in it's actual environment than in sunken chests. They gave us a lot of blocks without the proper atmosphere for them. Again, it's totally subjective, but I wouldn't mind waiting and just getting all the caves and cliffs stuff at once. This is also more of an opinion than a criticism of the developers. This is "Minecraft 1.18 Update Opinion Thread" after all.

single player. i am trying to go back to the xbox and remove myself from the beta builds. don't know how long that will take. want to find out how 1.17 really plays.
Very much enjoying the experimental snapshots so far. As a player since the alpha days, who has mostly kept up with the releases, I can honestly say that this dedication to improving the terrain and making it feel more natural and have like a better overall flow is very welcome. While there's definitely a little more polishing to do, having tested the same seed throughout ESs 3-5 I can really see a marked improvement in how the biomes come together. Exploration for the pure joy of seeing something awesome or truly unexpected is about to become a thing again.
I think it will be a great update to make the game more realistic, with more details that will make more players join this great community because of how beautiful Minecraft is. I did not try the snapshot, rather I saw images and videos, fence that surprised me by mountains so big that they can help or hinder your gameplay depending on what you are going to do.
Dropping this here because it is a good watch and very informative. Henrik has been very open about his progress with the terrain and cave generation, here he is playing and rambling on about how it the new terrain gen works for an hour. It's interesting stuff, he goes into how the multi-noise system works, what the new f3 info means, and goes very deep into why things are the way they are and what their overall goal is.
It's also cool how he uses a duel setup that are synced together to compare seeds from different versions.
Overall across all snapshots I've played I'm beginning to enjoy this new terrain more than beta. Making new worlds gives some discovery again as any world you start in could have terrain wildly different from the last. It's like a mashup of all the greatest parts of the world gen across versions, though unpolished still. I haven't even gone into the caves yet and how much they shake up the world.
This video is very interesting. Watched it all the way through. 5 different noise maps all working together to give us this new terrain. Looks like they're really trying to nail down the micro biome issue. I'd say that it's pretty good now but completely getting rid of them may or may not happen. I look forward to making a new world in 1.18. I decided to skip over 1.17 so that I would get the full caves and cliffs experience as initially intended.
From what I saw of those massive mountains, I have to say 'no' to liking bigger world generation. It looks cool but takes forever to cross - you're just adding to the existing time needed to cross distances since 1.7.

Cross distances to what exactly though? The world didn't exactly generate many other interesting things other than the same biomes with restricted height.
There is still plenty of flat land in between the mountains, and on top of that rivers are now a very viable method of transport since they don't dead end nearly as much. And horses are now more useful than ever since they step up blocks and can sprint up mountains. Have you played it, or just "saw"?

I meant to find structures or more so for the annoying all biomes achievement.
latest snapshot for bedrock is great. 1.17.40.21 terrain is so interesting. it has a great cone going down with lots of trees. oak and beech. it's on a fairly large island. world is mostly water that i have found so far. did find few diamonds at -6. hard to find iron though so far. caves are excellent in this snapshot. plenty of enemies but interesting layout. some tight pathways and then open areas. nice balance there. there are several mountains towering above but haven't climbed them yet. don't know how to do the snow yet. anyway, great snapshot on this build.

i found a lush cave and got enough iron for a sword and iron pick and bucket. now out of iron again. explore the cave. no diamonds either.

I am personally testing 1.18 and looks like they added moss blocks into caves (aka the lush caves) but doesn't look any different yet...

Praise be to Spode.
yee actually really liked most recent snapshot, they are making this generation better and better
