"Far" is 16 chunks / 256 blocks, "Normal" is 8 chunks / 128 blocks, "Short" is 4 chunks / 64 blocks, and "Tiny" is 2 chunks / 32 blocks.
Also, this applies to any version prior to 1.7, although in 1.3.1-1.6.4 "Far" is effectively only 10 chunks / 160 blocks due to the internal server using a fixed view distance of 10. In addition, while I don't have source code for 1.2.5 vanilla 1.6.4 seems to limit the maximum rendered chunk radius to 12, which also seems to be the case for older versions since 16 chunks should load 17424 sections ("C: rendered/total"), or 8712 for 1.1 and earlier (128 world height) but I see only 10816/5408 in old screenshots, so it is really likely only 12 chunks and only 1.7+ truly have "Far" / 16 chunk render distance unless you use Optifine (and even then the 1.6.4, and probably back to 1.3.1, versions incorrectly set the server view distance so it is 10 until you set the render distance to 17 or more, thus 11-16 effectively don't exist).
counting from player position or from edge to another edge?
This is from the the chunk the player is standing in, which means the total width of the area is (distance * 2 + 1), so you can actually see up to 1 chunk further than the render distance depending on your position within a chunk. You can easily verify the exact distance by making a pillar at e.g. 8,8 and seeing from how far away it is still visible (for 16 chunks it should be visible from up to 264 blocks away, or 16 chunks plus half a chunk. If the pillar is at 0,0 it should be visible from up to 272 blocks to the east and south and 256 blocks to the north and west; in any case the minimum distance should be the render distance).

What a nice life hack with that extra-chunk trick.
I think the 10 chunk limit is annoying but in all honesty, since mobs de-spawn automatically past 132 blocks, you don't really need more than 8 chunks of viewing unless you are travelling.
Hello, guys!
How many chunks / blocks is equivalent to "Far" render distance in vanilla 1.2.5?

Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
thanx very much!
