The LAN feature wasn't added until release 1.3.1. so in any version prior to that, you'll have to host a server and connect to it for multi-player functionality.
I'm not sure if this can be done on a WAN (local network) but I think it can. I used to host a server on my PC and connect to it from the same PC, and the other player connected from outside the network, but in your case the other player should just be able to use your PC local IP address and it should work all the same.
I made the server and connected with my pc using localhost but when i use another pc i type in my Ipv4 address and it doesn't work. My question is if I have to portfoward if we are on the same wifi
my friend is
coming over i made a beta 1.7.3 server but i dont know if i have to portfoward it if we all are on the same network
I have been playing Minecraft Java since 1.7.9
