I like to play on a minecraft server, but I also have a world of my own that my family is also playing on. The problem is sometimes I want to play on the server while my family wants to play on the local world, how can I have two minecraft directories open at the same time?
Just open Minecraft twice. Keep in mind that each instance will call into the Mojang authentication server to verify that this account is 1)valid and 2)not currently in use (ie, playing Minecraft right now). Regarding point #2, each attempt will force-disconnect previous instances so if you are playing on the server and your kid jumps in to play on a local world he will be dumped into the local world and you'll be kicked off the server.
The only way around this is to buy additional accounts from Mojang, equal to the number of instances you expect to have running at the same time (if you only expect to have 2 instances then you only need to buy 2 accounts, but if you, your spouse, and your 2 kids all want to play Minecraft at the same time on 4 different devices then you need to buy 4 accounts).
There is no limit to how many games you can have open at the same time on one account, you can even be on multiple servers at the same time, they just have to all be different worlds/servers.
And it's hard to actually play more than one game at a time on a single computer, but you can be AFK in one world/server while you are active on another. And switching between open worlds is as easy as clicking on the window of the world you want to be active on.
So you should be able to start Minecraft and start your world (open to LAN I presume) then just start minecraft again and go to your server.
But you do have to be careful about opening your world twice, then what you do in one copy of Minecraft will overwrite what you did on the other.
(And maybe even cause corruption.)
What I do is have different directories and try to remember to start the right one for each copy of Minecraft I open, the game warns you if you start it in a directory that you are already using, you should take that warning seriously.
Nothing bad will happen as long as you don't open the same world twice but it's easy to do that by accident, better to just only have one instance per directory.

Just testing.
Alright, thanks, I was worried about the warning that mojang gives.
