What server provider would be able to give an always-online server that has enough power to host a variety of popular game types that people like to play on to potentially hundreds, if not thousands, of players for free?
Free server hosts all have some kind of limitation like webrosc mentioned. If you want a good, 24/7 server, you're going to have to pay something or host the server yourself on your own PC.

I would advise Server.pro. But before I tell you why let's check out the other alternatives first.
Well, I already tried Minehut before, and I was not too fond of it because it lacks configuration options, plugin managers, versions, plugins, and doesn't seem to work in a good way.
The first server hoster I used was Aternos, and I used it for a long time. The problem is the queue is too long, usually taking one hour to open the server each time.
Finally, Server.pro, which is as good as Aternos, has less queue, and I feel like it gives you more freedom to configure the server. The only problem is if you don't have a premium account, your server gets deleted after being inactive for one month, so make sure to always make file backups and keep on activating the server.
PS.: There is no free server host in which you can keep your server up 24/7 without having to renew it, only Aternos if someone stays AFK (in an AFK pool) in the server, also, if you are planning on making a big server, don't use those types of free server hosts, as they were made looking toward private servers so you can play with your friends. If you are going to make a big server at least rent a paid server host, and at best host the server yourself.
I need something free and good to play with my friends on, preferably 24/7.

Yeah, hosting servers isn't exactly cheap. If you find a free method, it's going to be pretty limited.
