Hi, I'm going to be starting a Hermitcraft-style, whitelisted SMP in a few weeks and I was wondering if anyone has an idea on how to get players onto it? I thought of posting on forums and on the discord, but is there a better way? Thanks!
The purpose of a whitelist server is to only allow certain people on it, so why would you want to make it a whitelist server if you want to advertise? Seems a little backwards to me.
At any rate, you can best advertise in the server section of these forms, various open MC discords, and creating a server page on different MC server list websites and having you and other players vote there daily (yes, there is a reason for /vote on every server ever)
advertising a server and a gaming community in general is a lot of work. The more you get involved in various communities where players gather that you want on the server the better. Create a community website, post in the server section of the minecraft forums, and post in other communities related to the style of your server/community. Talk to players posting they are looking for a community. Its going to take time and work to build a base of players, especially if you are looking to build a friendly community. I can't stress enough how long and much time it takes to get to that kind of a community. I think its worth it though.
Well thanks everyone for replying, but I've already started the server now. It took around 3-4 days to get 8 players. Also the reason I'm advertising is so I can actually get people to play.
Also I ended up using Minecraft's official discord to get players.

It rhymes with braille, not drool.

Thanks anyway!
np, keep up the advertising if you want to keep an active base on your server. 8 is an ok start.
