Ok so I back up my save everytime I quit because i'm scared that the world may become corroupt or I back up before I'm about to do something big(like fighting a boss ) that is if sth stupid happens. So the other day I was fighting the wither and the wither exposed diamonds but at the end the nether star dropped into lava.so I restored my save before I fought the wither .this time it didnt expose the diamonds and the nether star didnt drop into lava.So because i knew the location of the diamonds i went ahead and collected them.now i feel really guilty.do you think I cheated and why?
Cheating is defined by the player in his own world. You answer the question for yourself because everyone here will give you "yes," "no," and "who cares?" as responses.
I'd say yes because it made you feel guilty and you had to ask if it were cheating, regardless of what others might think (in other words, pretty much what BloodyPhoenix said).
On my SMP server I really only have one rule: don't ruin the game for others. "If you ruin the game for yourself, I'll be disappointed. If you ruin the game for someone else, I'll be annoyed, and I express my annoyance with perma-banning."
You are talking a "solo" game, as I understand it. Did you ruin the game for yourself? Even if you feel more secure in making backups, a good habit by the by, you *STILL* know going back to a restore changes the outcome.
"Save Scumming" is an actual term for what you did. As to "cheaty" or not, you have to decide what you are trying to get out of the game and what enjoyment you have in it. Is playing the whole game "Peaceful" or "Easy" Difficulty "cheating?" What if you put in a "God Mode" mod? Getting back to the example of my server, we have an older fellow who isn't as spry as he used to be, and he gets confused easily. "Jori" has "God Mode" as agreed on by all the players so he is *able* to play with us. Is that cheating? Since the difference is him being able to play AT ALL, no. It isn't. My wife insists on VoxelMap and a mod to know what tiles are spawnable (that need lit up) and a "full-bright" mod so she is able to see. I make sure everyone ELSE has access to the same mods, and they know what plugins are in use, and so on.
I do agree with TMC, what you did was "cheating", but only because 1) you had to ask, and 2) you felt guilty. I hope your take-away is to sort out how YOU want to play the game, and NO GUILT! Enjoy it, that's what it is there for. And because you don't have to worry over how you may harm the game for other players, so much the better. You should enjoy the game YOUR way, and bother to anyone else who says different. If your joy comes from "Save Scumming", that's what you should be doing. *I* sure as heck do that on some of the games I play. You do what trips your trigger. You are worth!
Restoring a backup isn't a free lunch - your recreation time isn't infinite - but it can make the learning curve less painful. What did you learn from this experience? What might you do differently if you planned to summon another demon armed with military-grade explosives? (You would have discovered the diamonds - and the lava - eventually, so knowing where they were didn't give you your time back.)

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
