I don´t why this happens, i think minecraft is still buggy. Let´s hope notch will fix these problems before the full release.
It's not a bug so much as a... I guess poor planning?
Whenever minecraft opens a level, it unzips the level.dat. If the game/computer crashes before it can be properly closed, it corrupts the level.dat. Below bedrock is the lowest non-integer location the game can do. Technically a fix could be implemented into the game, pretty easily. Whether they do, is hard to say.
As for the other question of the odd land formation, that occurs when the seed changes. A lot of people lost their seeds at the halloween update due to mistakes and errors during the McRegion changeover. It wasn't the update that caused the problem, but the update made the game vulnerable to the problem, so people blamed it on that.
Also: Sir Pumpkin, thanks for the help!

May there be a server out there that truly stand to the spirit of vanilla Minecraft.

So my computer shut down in a recent thunderstorm and now the whole thing wont work. this is the corrupt file. i have an old working version that i can provide if it will help. If you can fix this i would love you.
MajorHep: Ill need the entire save file for the world, including the /region folder. I also would like the old level.dat if you could too.
Gr44: Can you also provide the level.dat from the older backup as well? Was the second link you gave just an alternate source? They seemed to be the same file.
Also, as a reminder. If you use the MCSaver.net website (and I recommend you do! You'll get a much faster response through that), please avoid posting on the forums with a separate request. Or at the very least note that you also did it. I fixed a few maps this weekend that I didn't realize I had already fixed previously.

Siversten: Ive got yours fixed (and will upload it later tonight) But something struct me as odd.
The broken world folder you sent me looks like this
World/region/(map files here)
But in the world folder is ANOTHER world folder, with its own set of region map files, and THAT looks like its the correct map, since its actually intact with castles and stuff. I was able to fix that and all the bad chunks it has. So... thats what Im going with. Let me know if thats accurate.

I most certainly appreciate the work that you fine gurus do on the forum.
My dear (4 days of playtime) savefile is experiencing a strange issue. It appears that a certain portion of the land is taking a chunk of another area and is imposing it onto the landscape. This happened after a crash with a minecraft backup program that also invalidated my stored backups. The area where this occurs is somewhere around [ x = 117.38; y = 80.62; z = -158.91 ].
My system specs are as follows:
Minecraft 1.7.3
Windows 7 64-bit
Java 1.6.0_26
And: My world file is here.
If any additional information is needed I will be all to happy to give it to you.
Regardless of the final result I would like to thank you again for your hard work in helping people diagnose their issues.
I've must have screwed up when moving the files around some time. You are correct the world inside the world is the right one. This also explains the strange size, I guess I did not pay enough attention to the contents i sent. I don't have time to test it right now, but thank you for repairing my broken world.

Majorhep: Those two files you linked are the same as the first one. I still need the actual entire old uncorrupt world folder in a zip. As well as the new corrupt one.
DesPwnMstr: Fixed! Looks like some bad chunks. Only damage is a tiny section of the wall, but that should be easily fixable. http://www.mediafire.com/?pzjhh3fmhtczm6j
GR44: I checked out all those maps, the issue is that it appears none of those three have the original seed. Do you have an older save anywhere by chance? Or perhaps it might be saved in the server.properties file?

Thanks for fixing my world. The center of one of the castle was gone, but that was expected. It now rains in the desert and snows in my castle. That has never happened before. The map seed is however correct.

Is there any reason to anticipate that the 1.8 update will cause the new chunks not to blend well with the old ones? Any help would be appreciated <3
