I'll post a little notice about the types of corruption I'm seeing in 1.3 format worlds, since a lot of people are having the same problems.
The most common problem I've seen (apart from corrupted metadata) is an indexing error in a region file where the same chunk is referenced by the region file index as being located in multiple areas. The effects this seems to have are different on smp and ssp, on smp it often causes server errors and prevents the world from loading properly, and on ssp if seems to cause regions in which any entity that enters freezes.
Taking this into account, I will incorporate fixes to these issues into the program I am building.
Thanks for your patience. I'm a busy dude, and this thread gets a lot of traffic. It takes anywhere between 10 minutes and several hours to fix a world, depending on what's wrong with it, and this thread gets several hits per day. I have to deal with schoolwork and everything as well, and I have nowhere near enough hours in my days to keep this thread up to date, so it lags behind by several days usually. Thanks for your patience. :smile.gif:
My PC shut down wile playing minecraft because of a power out and since then the map i played at that time won't show up in the map selection screen.
I tried renaming the level.dat_old file but it didn't work. The PC I'm using runs windows 7 64bit and Java 6 Update 24 (64 bit).
I really hope you can fix my map (I spent a lot of time there ^^).
Also if is not to much trouble can you remove the chunks that are far of in the north because that really annoys me when using cartograph.
Ok, lost power today and when I got my server back up the world file is extremely corrupted. I keep getting the Java Severe warnings and such and my last backup was made three weeks ago (I know, I know, I have been busy with school, but its no excuse). My friends and little brother are very upset, and if there is anything you can do we would be extremely thankful.
Now there were already chunk errors from the conversion to the new save format in 1.3, but we are more concerned with the total loss of the stuff they had constructed recently.
Anything at all you can do would be appreciated to the extreme. You are a gentleman and a scholar for doing this for people. Thank you so much in advance, and I am implementing a cron backup job (which I should have done weeks ago) so this will never happen again.
don't use filehosting, it's really irritating. it spams me with popups and I hate giving away my email address. use mediafire.
There is one badly corrupted chunk I removed, which might allow the server to start again. Aside from that, I don't think there's anything I can do. I fixed a few less corrupted chunks as well, so the server shouldn't have as much running the map.
There is no substitute for regular backups, learn how to make them. Read the first and second posts.
It was pretty bad around the spawn area, but there's nothing that can be done about that (it seems like the map has been corrupted several times before). Get in the habit of making a nightly backup, or maybe configure a script to make one every hour.
I ran the map through Chunkster (http://forums.bukkit.org/threads/admin-chunkster.8186/) which said it found and deleted a bad pointer in one of the chunks (which was the one I listed the coordinates for) and that it would regenerate.
The initial run of the server so far shows no error messages and I'm currently running around triple checking everything so far. I'm skeptical that it was that easy but then again I'm pretty sure it was just that one chunk that got corrupted. It regenerated into random terrain and I'll be running a battery of tests on it to be sure, but it may have actually fixed it.
I'll post an update after I stress test it some more.
UPDATE: Problem appears to be fixed after running it through Chunkster. For anyone wondering what the error message I was getting, it was similar to the "Wrong Location ea@XX" type messages you see people getting. They will simply endlessly spam your console window when you try to start the server up. If you are getting these types of messages, try using this method and see if it corrects the issue.
Still tinkering - I can see that my file undeletion was not perfect...r.0.-1.mcr seems to have been conflated with an exe of some sort:

I was wondering if you'd notice. From the metadata and the chunks of what appear to be internet cookies, I'd say it's the file undeleter you downloaded. :X In future, download them to an external disk.
Hi there apocalypse and everyone else helping, you ppl are doing a great work here, and maybe you could help me too.
A few days ago I noticed just the same as falcon. As he said:
Quote from FalconV »
If a player places a block, a couple seconds later it will disappear, then a few seconds after that (or so) the block will reappear and stay indefinitely. If a player breaks a block, it doesn't immediately drop an item, instead a couple seconds later the block will reappear.
It was near my spawnpoint, a few blocks in front of the house entrance i got there. Anyway, it stopped happening eventually, so I stopped bothering about. I don't know if this has nothing to do about what happened next, but still I had to tell...
Yesterday the power company shoot down my area, and sadly my savegame was affected. Once the power went back, I powered on the server, and everything around where I was at that time looked right, but when i got to my base at the other side of the mountain where the previous entrace is, a hill had tired it apart. It had literally grown a hill tiring some of it apart.
Not beliving what I was seeing, tried to relog on the server, but this time it took several minutes (when it usually takes a couple seconds), and once inside, I got terrible lag, and there was sheeps, sheeps everywhere. Also the server takes huge amounts of ram (1.5Gb or so).
Its completely unusable, it looks like it turned every dirt block into a sheep or something like that.
It would be great if you could help me getting my server back to work. I've uploaded both my corrupted savefiles and a backup folder from a couple days ago, it could help.
My sys specs are :
AMD Phenom 9550 quad core
4Gb Ram
Windows 7 Ultimate x64
Nvidia Gforce 9600gt
Java build 1.6.0_20-b02 32 bits
Part of your problem is that I'm pretty sure you can't modify areas near the spawn on smp servers. Also, issues with delay between breaking and the block actually breaking can be caused by having a slow connection. it also seems to happen if you try to run servers on windows, whose network software isn't really up for the challenge of smp.
Here I am! As I said before, my computer crashed while minecraft was saving and now it isn't displayed in the list of the worlds.
Windows Vista Home Premium SP2 32bit
Specs:
RAM: 4,00 GB
Core: Intel Core2 Duo CPU T7700 @ 2.40GHz
HDD: 31GB over 221GB
Video card: NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS
Java: 6.0.240.7
Having the same problem. Happend a few minutes ago. It did not display on the world selection screen like redead90* said. I want my save back :sad.gif:.
Using redead's format.
Windows 7 Ultimate 64Bit
Specs:
RAM: 4,00 GB
Core: Pentium (R) Dual-Core CPU E6300 @ 2.80Ghz
HDD: 194GB over 580GB
Video card: NVIDIA GeForce GT 220
Java: Version 6 Update 24
I have recovered my save of my main world several times from an old back up because of blue screen of death. I replaced the 3 files in the root of the save and that worked. Just had my inventory at the time of the back up though, and the spawn possition, lol. Really nice to see what you are doing here though for you!

Was playing and my laptop crashed (windows 7). Not BSOD but vertical lines. Just rebooted but when I played it again my world isn't showing up in the MC listing of playable worlds.
Cartographer works fine.
LOLedit sees the world files but says I have a corrupted magic number(?) when I try and open it.
Is there a symptom that makes clients crash? Clients throw NullPointers to do with entities (I used MCP to deobufiscate the exception) and server is writing this (I made a bukkit plugin to print out the chunks that are getting loaded):

java.lang.NullPointerException

Stopping!
Java is 1.6.0_24. Here is the save file. It worked fine before Beta 1.3, but now it crashes immediately on startup. I only had mo' creatures mod with a horse, I think that might be the problem.
Any help is appreciated... This was my second world ever and I spent about 2 months on it.

I rarely post on here, but I'd like you to have a look at my save whenever you have the time.
I compressed the file for my whole world, not just the level.dat... I'm not sure if that's what you want so I apologize in advance if that's not the case!
My save only has one bad spot that I know about.
It's in the near center of the map and it used to be my spawn point.
I have recently changed it with Mcedit since the problem occured.
I"m not sure what happened to it exactly but about a month ago something happened around the spawn region
now it's been forever laggy there and sadly unusable. I would love to get my world back into working order.
I have a corrupted chunk. I cant move my player but i can break stuff.
my java is automatically updated so I always have the newest version. This is on Mac OSX snowleopard. and thats all the information I can give you
My backups are corrupted too. They dont work at all
My save has been hit by some kind of bug whereby entire chunks are inaccessable, and any mobs or players entering them are frozen to the spot. You can still dig and interact with blocks, but not being able to walk is a bit of a downer. I was hoping maybe you could fix this. Thanks, what you are doing is awesome.
P.S The corrupted zones are approximately to the West and North of the saved player position, and I think the error is nestling in the Region folder, because it remains when all other folders are replaced. Thanks again.
G12, try this out and see if it works: World4: http://www.mediafire.com/?ilu9i1t9z5gq7pl. I'm not sure how many chunks were regenerated or if there is any structure damage.
Troagador, the archive file you uploaded has a corrupt file in it. Try repackaging and reuploading it. I downloaded it twice to make sure and both times I got an error extracting it.
