Hi. I'm quite new in the forums but I've been playing Minecraft since the Nether Reactor was still around in PE. (Though further details are unnecessary at this point.)
Now I'm a guy who's been invited to a Realm in Hard Mode. We took nether transportation to get to the jungle biome. I found an ocelot but considering that 1.14.3 split Cats and Ocelots into two different mobs, Ocelots cannot turn into cats and just become normal mobs after feeding it fish. In the past, Ocelots were known to Despawn if not tamed, but now this update changed the function entirely. I have been searching for answers but all of them were outdated. All it said was that you can "tame" an ocelot, but it doesn't follow you like a dog or sit down by your command.
Existing thread or not, do trusting ocelots despawn?
Me and my jabronis are also thinking of bringing the ocelot(and pandas) to the nether up to our base on the other portal, so is that possible?
I don’t know if trusting ocelots despawn but in case they do it might be a worth a try to name them with a name tag. And I would try to use a lead on them to get them through a portal. Paulsoaresjr has a 1.14 video series in which he made a nature preserve and keeps trusting animals that don’t despawn.
The Wiki article doesn't mention anything at all about despawning (before they would randomly despawn after 2 minutes if untamed, which isn't mentioned anywhere now, only in the history section; if this is true though then they could cause serious overpopulation issues if they still spawn as they did before, under the hostile mob cap, while being passive mobs, so an infinite number can spawn. Even with the 2 minute despawn timer (1.6.4) I see 300-400 entities, mostly ocelots, in jungles once I've explored all the caves under them. Because of this, they must still despawn - but certainly not once they are "tamed"/"trusting", which now seems to work much like it does for horses (taming a horse only lets you ride it, otherwise its behavior is the same as a wild horse).
Before i left the server, i dug a hole and trapped the ocelot there. I'm not sure if its still there though. I'm sure my friends havent figured out where it is because i havent told them so theyre unable to lead or trap the ocelot in proper fences. (At that point i was weary and tired from travelling outside the jungle to lure the ocelot out so don't judge me. :P)
I don't know if ocelots despawn, to be honest I haven't tamed an ocelot before although I had tamed wolves in Minecraft.
However I would say just in case they did despawn you should keep spare animals of different sorts stored in different locations on your world.
There's also the possibility that skeletons could've killed some during your travels, obviously skeletons would try to hurt you, but the occasional misfire hitting tamed animals will damage them and if enough damage was taken, they'd die.
For this reason it's better to tame your favoured animal during the day time and away from any nearby caves or dark structures like temples which are found in jungles.
Okay so I found out. I got another ocelot and bred the two. Unfortunately their child isnt tamed so it runs around the fencing. When i went out to explore and got back, only the parenting ocelots remain. I guess tamed ocelots never despawn.
