I have built computers before, and have messed around with creating servers. Now I want to actually do it, and grow a community. I figured building it would be good that way I have control over everything, hardware, software, etc. I have build a rough lest of parts here, but i'm not too sure on what i'm doing. I do know you dont need a good computer to run a server, but I do want it to be good, and not cut corners. My internet is 1Gb down and about 50mbs up. Any advice or tips would be amazing!
I started out with Realms and then I moved to a Mini PC which can support 2~4 players and now I am moving onto a Dell with an I5 9400 12gb of ram and a 1tb hard drive and I have a 500gb ssd here for it. (it's going to be here tomorrow)
P.S. my download is 250mbps and my upload is 20mbps and the most amount of people I had on the Mini PC at one time was 7 and it overloaded the Mini PC which is why I bought the new Dell. So hosting from home can be done if you know what you're doing.
i would suggest you don't start out with spending $800 on the hardware.
start out renting a small server then when you have a big community look into spending money to expand, everyone and their dog is trying to make a massive community and their is an over saturation of servers, there is a massive chance you will not make it big and will have spent the money on server hardware for nothing
That's true there is a major oversaturation of servers which is why I don't run a general public server. My server is for friends and friends of friends and no one is going to grief or screw each other over because we're all friends. And as for buying a server goes, pay Nodecraft $30 a month for a 3gb server or pay Dell $21 a month for an I5 9400 6core, 12gb of ram, 1TB hard drive. When it gets here tomorrow I am going to install Ubuntu 18.02 server and a 500gb SSD and Java Minecraft and Bedrock Minecraft for when I am away from home. In 2 years or less ill own my Dell or give Nodecraft $720 for 2 years and own nothing. Also, $30 a month is just for Java and not Bedrock, Bedrock would be an additional charge. I guess what I am getting at is it depends on what he is going to do with the server, it just might be better to buy a server.
