This forum to me serves as a litmus test. I don't think Minecraft will belly up any time real soon, but we're definitely in the end days. The game is too fractured across too many platforms. The Java Edition flagship is crumbling under the weight of a decade of coding errors that never get fixed. Bedrock edition is a joke. Mojang is still focused on feature glut, although I do see the improvements made to villages as an indication of a move in the right direction.
But the problem is, it's too little, too late. The new villages aren't that great, and it's ridiculous that they are so given how much creativity Mojang had to draw from. Hypixel is shaping up to show people what a modern take on the concept can be, and Minecraft has little chance to get out from under that. I think it's very telling these upgrades to legacy features are coming after Hypixel's announcement. Even Mojang sees the writing on the wall.
Good things cans till happen in Minecraft, but the stage is exceptionally well set for a successor in a way it's never been before. And now without a centralized community hub, things only get more fractured. If Mojang and Microsoft had any sense about them at all, they'd bend over backwards to purchase this forum. It's the ultimate ad platform with a built in customer base and, for them, it could even serve as a loss leader service. But that lack of common sense on Microsoft's part is another reason for pessimism.
All we can do is wait and see, but I'm not optimistic.

Totally agreed. The fact that they tried too hard on spreading into other platform might be another factor that led to their demise. Minecraft should've been a PC game only. And with the money grabbing scheme that is bedrock edition exist, the future of Minecraft is surely without doubt a grim one.

I'm guessing you mentioned Hypixel because of Hytale. I'm quite optimistic that with the launch of that game, Minecraft will crumble and fall down to ruin. Although it is depressing, it's a good lesson for Mojang that their work into Minecraft was nothing but horrible (aside from some content from Update Aquatic) and for them to actually learn about good game design. I can safely say after the over-hyped update that is Village and Pillage, Hytale would be the objectively better game, if they don't screw up.

I'm not sure about this statement. Nothing would change if Microsoft/Mojang purchased this forum. The same outcome would still occur. Truth is, the forum itself has bound to died because more and more simply prefer the reddit. And i don't know how it'd make sense for them economically to purchase this forum of the Minecraft subreddit which is not only growing but also gives them the advantage of not paying for hosting fees.
And i don't even think this forum will be a loss leader, it could be the opposite seeing the already existence of ads and curse premium that should've bolster this website. It may be a cold move by microsoft part, but it is financially smart.
All we can do is wait and see, but I'm not optimistic.
Well, the worst that could happen is Minecraft being a legacy game played by a niche community, which would still requires Mojang not to screw things up.
As a hosting company we still see a strong demand for the game with a huge amounts of requests for hosting. However I agree there are too many platforms and they really messed everything up when they tried to prevent people from making money from the game.
Being able to make money from hosting a custom server with mods or plugins is something that keeps games alive. Look at games such as Counter strike source etc which had big communities and people would donate to help pay the bills.
I give it a few more years before it really dies off unless they make some great changes.
I think it is absurd that anybody still talks about the game dying, with every update on sales up by at least 20 million over the last one, a year or less earlier, and player counts rising just as fast:
Even Google Trends shows a recent increase in search popularity (I've often written this off because it doesn't accurately reflect the popularity of the game given the data above; the game is obviously far more popular today than it was in 2013 based on player count):
These are both from before the recent increase in popularity:
Fwiz reveals the most popular game on YouTube and it's not Fortnite (based on my own subscriptions, most of which are from 2013 or earlier and getting very few views and/or no longer playing, same for many other big Minecraft YouTubers, and the views on Fortnite videos suggested to me (even though I don't watch it) I might be tempted to believe otherwise but I'd trust official data over personal experience. Part of the reason for the decline of YouTubers may be because there are so many now, and/or what people like to watch or the content they make has changed)
The community is a different matter, as can be seen on these forums (though places like Reddit are more active than ever for reason I don't understand; 90% of the time when I comment on a post I never see it again unless somebody replies to me since there is no good way to organize them and there are so many posted daily; this also hinders any form of long-running threads, such as the "what have you done recently" thread in Survival Mode, or world journals). I also agree that Mojang's bad coding practices (mostly since 1.8; the "Notch" code that is often blamed for bad performance or limitations has mostly been rewritten, sp614x refers to pre-1.3 versions as being "original Notch code", though 1.6.4 still has the memory usage behavior that they describe) are damaging the Java version (this is one reason why I never updated past 1.6.4, in addition to making my own mods to make my own version of the game and my unique playstyle. Of course, this isolates me from the rest of the community, furthering that issue), though the Java version hasn't declined either (it was about 16% of sales at the end of 2012, and still is compared to total lifetime sales; games in general sell many more copies on console/mobile platforms, especially as many people don't even bother with computers these days).
As a hosting company we still see a strong demand for the game with a huge amounts of requests for hosting. However I agree there are too many platforms and they really messed everything up when they tried to prevent people from making money from the game.
I don't get the gist of "too many platforms". I thought having the game released through as many platforms would mean reaching to new audiences which is a good thing. As for the "preventing people from making money in the game", they don't prevent it, they limit it so that unethical practices like the pay2win server won't exist which is arguably a good thing. And although this may seem controversial, the marketplace is technically a platform for Minecraft creators to earn money.

Mojang still allows donation for modders and many more, All they did was ridding those pay2win servers which are good riddance IMO. So I don't get where this statement comes from if you're talking about the EULA than many people now supports it.

IMO Mojang has done great changes. While the updates could've been improved, you can't deny this new addition makes the game alive.

As a money-maker, the MC franchise is likely to continue for a goodly few years.
MS/Mj has repeatedly stated that MC and its bedrock offshoot will NOT be brought into feature congruence – most particularly with redstone…
This bifurcation of the game is already having effects with what is effectively two differing games giving rise to two different communities as builds and (to a lesser extent) strategies become platform specific. [The notably lower mob caps in some subdivisions of bedrock further dividing that community.]
As badly as the 1.9 combat changes split the MC community, the continuing practice of changing basic mechanics every update is likely to do worse.
For non-bedrock players, the future may well be one of a contracting player base [something supported by the article about the move from mouse & keyboard interface posted by TMC] that is fragmented by the lack of game mechanic compatibility MS/Mj has been introducing with each of the last two versions.
[This will not be helped by the ongoing issue with performance seemingly being a disregarded design goal for several versions.]

Microsoft bought Mojang in Sept. of 2015 for $2.5 Billion.
They've left Mojang alone as far as Java Minecraft is concerned.

I'd like to see Microsoft push the PC version more. The PC (java) version is by far the best version and has the most potential. But I do agree with those that are saying minecraft is on too many platfoms. If all the platforms could access the same servers than I'd disagree with this notion. But pushing minecraft PE was a bad idea.

As much as I personally prefer the java edition, the bedrock (which you seem to refer as PE) has more potential. Existing in a lot more hardware, having crossplay, and the modding API. I think the community handles java version better while Mojang is killing it with handling bedrock. And can someone explain what "too much platform" even mean? It's frustrating enough to see the game you desire doesn't run on specific hardware you bought, and it also widens the audience. I also don't get the statement of your disagreement with cross-platform play (unless it's a competitive server then it's logical due to unfair advantages on certain hardware).
I don't think Mojang pushing the bedrock edition, while could've been greatly improved, a mistake. The other version of Minecraft before better together lacks so much update to the java edition that it frustrates that part of the community, hence leading to said community begging for Mojang to make the update earlier which results in toxicity.

Don't forget that everyone in Idaho and Utah is still interested in Minecraft for some reason.
