I've only played single player and I want to play multiplayer now so I joined a couple of servers but I wasn't sure what to do in them. There were so many places in the spawn point (for example pvp area, creative area) that I got confused where to go. (I basically wanted to go to a biome where I can start and meet a few other players).
The other thing is to be safe I joined servers only after googling so they were all really big with so many players and I felt isolated. And if I'm isolated I might as well stick to single player.
So can someone help me figure out a server to join or what I am supposed to when I join a server?

Well, it seems like you've never played a server before...
I'll tell you the different aspects.
1. Factions. Factions is like survival mode except there are other players. In Factions, they can destroy your base, raid, or kill you. Watch out, you'll need defenses.
2. Towny. Towny is like survival, except in this time, there are land claims. Land claims stop anyone from building, destroying, or interacting with anything on the area you've claimed.
3. SkyWars. If you haven't heard of this, well... You each get a floating island, with chests on it. The chests have loot. You have to build your way to the middle and all fight.
4. Survival Games. This is a minecraft twist on Hunger Games. There's loot in the middle, chests scattered around the map, the barrier closes in quickly. Basically the Minecraft battle royale.
5. Duels. Hand to hand combat with another player in an arena, some servers have tournaments.
6. Bed wars. Too complicated to explain, but it's on the Hypixel server, which is the most popular server. Mineplex has a twist on it called cake wars.
7. Build wars. You have a certain time limit, you have to finish a build in time and there's then voting after to see who did the best. Mineplex has a twist on this where you have to memorize the structure, and recreate it to best ability, the AI judges who did it best.
8. Kit pvp. You all get a kit, the higher rank, or level, the better the kit. You all go into an arena and fight. Hypixel has a cool twist on this called The Pit.
9. Also known as housing, it's basically creative.
For a normal survival game with some friends. I do not recommend factions or towny. You should try to find a decent server with a small community. Big servers don't tend to be so survival friendly for the casual player, there's kits, pvp, claims, levels, all of that. I recommend finding a normal survival server for that, with a small, but loyal, community. I tend to play modded servers that are like this, not over the top mods, just a few good ones to play and meet new friends on. Technic Launcher has many good server packs, Twitch packs require a really good PC. R/minecraft buddies is a place where you can ask people to play if you're into that stuff.
Message me if I could play with you sometime. I could show you some good servers.
So there are a couple different types of popular survival servers, some are more "towny" (Land claims, nobody else can claim land claimed by you)
Others are more anarchy. They range between complete chaos, with hacks and block breaking allowed, and land claims where your team can find other people's bases and raid them.
Usually it's the smaller servers with completely vanilla worlds and no lobby, because in every survival server there's a chance people will destroy other people's bases and kill each other if enabled.
You could also consider applying to join a minecraft realm or private server with less strict rules while also being hard to get into.
Edit: I don't really consider hypixel minigames survival, though I know a lot of people enjoy them.
What you are looking for is a survival server. I recommend this server- a year ago I was playing on it, sounds like exactly what you are looking for. Survival servers respect the privacy of singleplayer but you can also meet new friends.
The big servers you found are called minigame servers. They are the largest servers out there the basically distort the game into all sorts of new games. I frankly don't like them because of how corporate, flashy, and confusing they have become.
I'd suggest also avoiding faction servers. People will constantly steal and ruin your stuff unless you have your own mini-army. Joining a new faction can be tough with many tricking you and then killing for your starter gear.
Honestly, old school creative and survival servers are where it's at.

Hi thank you so much for the reply. Wow I'm so dumb I assumed all servers were the same T_T (that all were like vanilla survival singleplayer except with more people). I should look up the type of server before joining ( I tried to before but I couldn't really understand any server descriptions since I never played multiplayer T_T).
So whats the name of the type of servers I should be looking for? Survival servers? Thank you again.

hi thanks for writing all this. So from all those descriptions I'm kinda confused which one I should join T_T (but Towny sounds the best). Most of the Towny servers I found online were too big though.
I know the feeling.... So many different servers with different 'themes', hubs with many 'portal' to areas, some with minigames it can get confusing.
I'm no expert but here's a simple guide to some of the types of servers (note when I say Servers this also means servers that have spawn hubs with portals to 'PvP,'Creative','Survival' areas etc
'Survival' - this is basically Minecraft survival.. the same as your single player. Its a world you got out explring, gather resources etc
Some servers will claim to be 'Vanilla' while others 'sVanilla'.
- 'Vanilla' is basically the same as vanilla Minecraft with NO plugins added.
This means players can find other players homes/bases & grief/loot them.... They can also find other players & kill them (Usually called 'PvP' or 'Player vs player'). On some servers this is allowed so anyone complaining about 'xxx killed me & took all my stuff' won't usually get you your stuff back or the other player banned
- 'sVanilla' is Minecraft with SOME plugins added.. it's the same as normal single player but usually the plugins add stuff like 'Claim protection' (players can set up a 'home' & build & no other players can grief or loot that claim) & 'Pvp toggle' (An option to prevent players killing other player unless BOTH player type in a command)
'Creative' servers are the same as singleplayer creative mode. Players are sometimes allocated a 'plot' of their own, the players have full access to all the blocks so they can build without having to go exploring and gathering resources
'Skyblock' servers are where players are given a small 'island in the sky' & have to used the contents of a chest to build up their island into a self substained base. There's no exploration to gather resources (usually) - Some servers have a 'shop' so players can purchase item/blocks etc that you can't get from the resources in the chest (If you search Youtube for 'minecraft skyblock' you can see how players start out)
'PvP' are servers that players fight one another & steal each others items etc.
Some servers have mini-games (hypixel is one such place) where players choose to go to certain type of games. These are usually heavyly modded servers using custom plugins & mainly concentrate on games rather than the typical minecraft experience
Some servers are 'themed' - for example 'Prison servers'.. I can't tell you what these are mainly about since I've never been on them
As to you googling servers to find 'safe' places. You already found out that the larger well known servers will have many thousand of player slots (slots is the maximum number of players that can be playing on that server at the same time) & it can be difficult to 'make friends', these also have multiple arenas & you can feel isolated.
Unfortunately Minecraftforums have removed their 'server list' section & I'm pretty sure I'm not allowed to post other website links, but if you google for 'minecraft server list' you'll get results of other webpages that allow you to search for servers
It sounds like your best bet is to find servers that have smaller 'slots' (Player postions) in the 'Hundreds' instead of the 'Thousands', this could give you a better chance to see regular player names pop up, giving you the chance to talk to them one-to-one & perhaps make frineds - maybe trade in-game , start build projects together
I can only suggest is try a few out - it sounds like you may prefer a more 'natural minecraft survival' experience than playing custom mini-games - pop on & see if there's more than just you on (try at different times - maybe weekends would be better). See if they have a website & check to see what their rules are & what feature the server has (eg it may have a in-game economy/trade system or a 'skills tree' or 'quests' (& avoid those that try to convince you to pay real money for 'in-game perks' like special armor/weapons etc
I wouldn't necessarily avoid Towny servers, I don't have much experience with them but , depending on their rules and setup, you can probably start your own, private, town and build a base just like you would in plain Survival, and then look around and see if you find a town you think you'd like to join or stay with what you've got.
There could be a weekly fee for maintaining a town, it would be up to the server owner whether that was prohibitive for a loner or just a way of weeding out abandoned towns.
I've only played single player and I want to play multiplayer now so I joined a couple of servers but I wasn't sure what to do in them. There were so many places in the spawn point (for example pvp area, creative area) that I got confused where to go. Fanks. :3
So I take it you're looking for a more vanilla "no minigames" server?
hi I guess so but not a total ghost town with like 5 people either that'll be awkward

Hey guys I'm James, I used to be a noob but now I'm not, I finally figured out how to use TextCraft so here's a banner for one of my suggestions.

Just testing.
