In this post I will be detailing some of my thoughts on firearms or guns in Minecraft and how they could be adjusted to fit in. Note that the type of firearms I'm discussing are older, black powder firearms that would fit best with Minecraft's general theme.
Would Firearms Affect the Game's Age Rating?
I acknowledge that some people have strong feelings against implementing guns to the game due to concerns involving appropriateness for all ages. Since Minecraft's violence is really just cubes flashing red for a split second, guns would not place additional violence in the game. If this is not enough evidence, there are already somewhat disturbing features such as:
An entire gory, hell themed dimension
Warts that grow out of a sand filled with screaming faces
Pig humanoids covered in rotting flesh
9-foot tall humanoids that dislocate their jaws when aggravated
A music disc that conveys a frantic miner trying to escape someone or something
Arrows that stick grotesquely out of players when they're shot by bows
While guns have many physical differences to bows and crossbows, they are all based on the same principle; propelling a projectile into and through the air to cause harm to another object or being. I won't get into bloody detail, but swords and axes are arguably more brutal weapons. In conclusion to this section, guns would not make the game nor its players violent. Censoring issues from players does not solve them, nor does it teach them responsibility.
There are some that argue that Minecraft is more about building while combat is fine just as it is. In reality they both go hand-in-hand, however combat has been gathering dust especially after all the potential promised by the 1.9 combat update. After some recent hints provided by Mojang involving some sort of usage of the fletching and smithing tables, it would be safe to say that another combat update will come soon. With that in mind, this may actually be a perfect time to implement some additional ranged weaponry options.
Guns have some notable advantages over bows and crossbows, however black powder weaponry had some major disadvantages that at the time of their introduction in the real world, people were still using swords and bows. I have compiled some conditions and limitations to guns so that they could be their own unique weapon while not steamrolling all other weapon options.
Reloading guns will be similar to the crossbow in the sense that you can have it loaded in an off-hand slot, however (and I think this should be applied to crossbows too) there is a delay similar to what enderpearls have that prevent you from switching between multiple guns for rapid fire.
Walking and running with a gun causes a dramatic decrease in accuracy, forcing players to stand still, crouch, or crouch-walk to attain maximum accuracy.
Once a gun's projectile hits a block, it disappears and prevents a player from retrieving it like they would with an arrow.
Gunpowder, already being difficult to obtain large amounts of, and iron, which is used for a great many of other useful things, is required to use guns and is a limitation in and of itself.
Gun durability would have to be the same as a bow, as making it weaker would be unfair because guns would likely require iron to be crafted.
Gun projectiles cannot be fired out of a dispenser.
If you have any thoughts or think I missed some key details, please let me know as I am curious as to what the MC community thinks of guns as of now since most of the gun discussions I've found are from years ago.
A proposal to add anty type of firearm to MC is near certain to die (and a horrible gory death it will be) on the horms of public opinion, because [You Know  ] guns ≡ bad….
Then there is MS/Mjs position that guns will never be added (of course a purist might argue that that covers neither small arms nor grenades… to say nothing of more esoteric armaments like fougasses . . . or howitzers if one is particularly literal minded).
"Censoring issues from players does not solve them, nor does it teach them responsibility."
If what was at issue was a matter of logic this (and the proceeding paragraphs) would be unnecessary as the issue would have been won.
…but firearms policy is rarely logical [cf riot gun vs sawed-off shotgun].
[How firework launching crossbows are some how fine remains a mystery :IDK: ]
Assuming the above could be overcome:
anything up to (and possibly including) the effectiveness of the arquebus (ie heavy, expensive, slow firing, accuracy less than a bow) could probably be made workable.
Things to avoid would be
cartriges (even the old bullet and powder in paper version)
While MS/Mj seem intent on making iron a rare material, creeper farming has yet to be affected (beyond the general mob spawning bugs); nor is it likely to be given the widespread popularity of elytra + rockets....
Even then there will likely be opposition as these will be seen as not fitting the spirit of MC…
While firearm enabled mods exist, I have little reason to think such will ever make it into vanilla.
