Hey, crazy thought just popped into my head. I'm not too familiar with servers or world editing software, but if anybody is familiar with the board game "empire builder" I think they know how cool it would be to make a minigame based server that is based on building rails and delivering loads to cities on the map. The villages basically demand resources from other biomes like cities do in the board game. The villages also produce resources that make sense (fish near the ocean, trees in the forest, etc.) You have to pick up loads and deliver them to neighboring villages in exchange for payment. Rail is expensive, so your first trips are small and local. You have three cards that are public. Draw and discard when loads are dropped off. You can waste a turn and recycle all 3 if you want. You would have to replace the cards with some digital equivalent, (i.e a database and random number generator) and world events happen that can damage rails or trains (think flood, villager strike, or pillager raid) you get your pick of three deliveries per card, and three cards in total, just like the game.you could play in teams or alone, and are responsible for designing your network and moving your train simultaneously.
There's lots of details that could slide right over from the board games, the best part in my opinion is learning the geography of different parts of the real world, as well as their natural resources. If anyone out there thinks this would be worth persuing, post something below and I'll keep you in the loop on this thread when I have more ideas. If you know where to find seeds that resemble continents or realistic maps of countries/states that have significant coordinates marking cities/villages or rivers I'll be looking for one. My favorite Empire Builder map is of India, the Ganges is a beast to reckon with. America is the obvious and easiest map for younger players, I highly recommend the board game if you haven't played it, just know it takes some time to play.
And, final thought. Hermitcraft's map is downloadable, so it would be possible to play using sections of their rail network already in place. The cards would be for their individual bases, Sahara, etc. The shopping district could be a universal hub.
Tl;dr Help me invent a rail network based minigame where trains deliver loads to villages for emeralds.
