According to the Wiki (https://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Minecraft_Wiki) place, one cocoa bean cluster center crafting table and get one brown dye.
Did you try that?

The cluster of cocoa beans you get is brown dye!
I placed one bale of white wool together with one cocoa bean cluster on the crafting table and got one bale of brown wool.

Yes I tried all nine slots.
Since posting I accidently found out how to get the brown wool I was after. I taped a sheep with the Coco Beans instead of the Shears, presto brown wool.
I now have sheep and lambs with green, blue, red, brown, yellow, and orange wool in my sheep paddock. No more needing to dye the wool on the craft table
That covers wool (and is the preferred solution for most colors of which you use 'large' amounts);
for glass, terracotta, etc. use LoRaM100's note [emphasis added]:
WARNING: I have an extemely "grindy" playstyle; YMMV — if this doesn't seem fun to you, mine what you can from it & bin the rest.
Yeah cocoa beans ARE brown dye. Just like lapis IS blue dye and bonemeal IS white dye and ink sac IS black dye.
ok folk now I understand. Thank you all for the help
