For backstory, my favorite part of minecraft has been the economy trading for quite a while. Which has been villager trading. As of the more recent 1.14 update, i've noticed that it's changed. Now I don't quite know if it's an insane nerf, or if it's just ruined. As i've spent easily thousands of hours dedicated to trading, whether the trading or getting the material to trade, I've obviously locked out plenty of villagers fully during my time. But as of recent it's gotten stupid the lock rate. In this new world to test trading i started. I found a village and started trading, and I can tell you that of the first 4 farmers I found, 3 of the 4 fully locked from the start. For context, a farmer has 10 trades that can be done, a brand new born farmer has 4 trades, next 6 to be unlocked. 3 of the first 4 villagers I've found have locked out during those first 4 fully without ever showing the next 6. That is absolutely mind boggling. The first butcher I found did the exact same. And where it gets more aggravating, is the farmer of the 4 that didnt lock out instantly, has locked out sooooo much quicker then before, like 3 or 4 trades before category lock, whether buying or selling. And to boot, 8 of his 10 are fully locked and I'm scared that it's just gonna be all 10 once I get access to melon and pumpkin farm. And then to boot and wonder if the near 10k hours I've played over the last 8 years is coming to a close, is I had access to 1 weapon smith, who I was able to unlock his second tear, which is trades 3 and 4 of his 7 total, and then once again I had another fully locked out villager. Is this the end of the economy of trading? I'm literally struggling to even gain emeralds with carrot, potatoes and wheat, let alone the asinine rate in which villagers turn to walking paper weights,
1.14 being in the snapshot phase, buggy behavior is quite possible…
The has also been enough whining about "over powered" villager trading from some players (and a few comments by MS/Mj staff that were highly negative to various 'farming' technologies) that it is not beyond the realm of possibility that MS/Mj may be moving to 'brick' some of these builds.
You might try searching through the bug reports [ qv. https://bugs.mojang.com/browse/WEB-1243?jql= ] to see if this is being reported/discussed.
Having had a quick poke through the first site, I found this "Villagers profession level does not update correctly" [ https://bugs.mojang.com/browse/MC-141887 ] which suggests that this is a bug rather than an intended change.
(If this is your first trip through the site, you should be aware that Mojang marks as "RESOLVED" any report of an actually UNRESOLVEDbug they consider to be a duplicate report.)
I hope it's just buggy, because I've never seen such a horrible change. I mean if people thought trading was "overpowered" that's fine, and to an extend understandable, but to then go to having a good percentage of villagers never even unlocking trades beyond what they're born with is crazy! Let alone how often things are locking. I've noticed as of recent it's something like 3, 4, or 5 trades in a category, as in carrots then it locks. So if the carrots sell for 16 each, I'll most likely trade him 48 for 3 emeralds, 64 for 4, or 80 for 5 and that category is locked, which I can see as a balance method because 1.13 I could feel like I could go 8 -11 trades deep before a category like carrots would lock. So I just feel like the lower trades before category lock could very well mean villagers just brick themself and become walking paper weights might be a perm change, which just sucks. Because outside of any way of farming emeralds for tools, what I more so like is the creation of farming, be it crops, paper, flesh, string, wool or whatever else they would take. Then once I have a stockpile of one of the categories, spending time balancing trading those materials for emeralds, and keeping him reset, without major fear of him perm locking everything and become a paper weight. I just can't imagine how sad it would be if this is the trading system, constant fearing a bricking villagers, and then actually consistently bricking them.

I wasn't aware people actually traded that often. I usually just got the items myself lol.
