Hi there, I recently setup a spigot server running 1.13.2.
I don't want to delve into plugin details but it's a PvP / Hardcore Survival server focused around a good community.
MY QUESTION: What are the best ways you've found to bring in new players?
Things I have done:
- Installed votifier
- Posted the server on at least 15 server websites
- Bump wherever possible
- Made a server website, youtube ad and setup a twitter.
- Also purchased an ad which brought in over 100 players on our DISCORD, but none onto the server (waste of money I found out).
I remember back in the day a bump on PMC would get you at least 5 new players joining, but now ... nothing.
We have around 5-10 players on at peak times but I can see the server dying unless we get a constant flow of fresh blood.
As you can see I have done pretty much everything to get new players in, I am not expecting a huge flood but it has got to the point where some days we won't have any new players join.
Running a minecraft server is easy, getting your foot in the door and maintaining a playerbase is the hard bit, no one will play on an empty server (which is understandable).
Are there any other methods you would recomend, I am willing to spend big bucks on PROVEN advertising methods such as server listings, but it seems that even they now don't generate that much interest.
If you have over 100 people on your discord, @everyone and ask them what they would like out of the server.
Personally, I dislike the stuck up server owners who act like they know best and don't listen to the community. That's not to say you are like that, but if you are struggling to create a community why not ask those on your discord. Foster an open, constructive conversation.
I haven't played on your server so I have no idea what it's like, but from "PvP Hardcore Survival" it seems to offer something many other servers do. If you were ping me on discord I'd reply with do something different with the genre, such a custom map / server lore / plugin that adds a cool feature. But that's just me- you want to ask your discord, the people who will play on the server.
The Meaning of Life, the Universe, and Everything.
In these days, I dont think "PvP / Hardcore Survival" interest MC players anymore
Those gamemodes has been around for ages
I personally wouldn't join either as I already have a biased expectation of what I might see and experience in-game, which I think is pretty common mindset for all longtime MC players.
Aside, if you have 100 players in discord and none of them are joining, then there's a problem within the server itself. Spending money for advertisements and constantly checking and bumping your posts wont matter that much if the server itself doesn't pose interest to any players.
Those days you are talking when players are constantly joining some random servers are over. Most people now wants to see that server staffs are putting so much effort in their threads, ads, and the server by adding videos, trailers, and tons of unique features not just some plugins taken online.
Running a minecraft server is not easy in a long term. Creating one does.
Also, you should make sure that there will be players from different timezone, and understand that marketing your game is the most expensive process in any starting games.
Anyways, the most effective way of advertisement is still by /word of mouth/
If you are getting 100+ people into discord but no one into the game, something in your discord is driving people off. It could be no one talking, someone taking too long to answer a question, a troll user stealing people to their server, etc etc etc.
The other thing to remember is everyone wants something different in minecraft. At one point, I only joined whitelisted survival modded servers with low populations where I could make friends. Now I only join open modded survival with the pack I want to play AND IS STABLE. I would never join a pvp server of any kind.
