In one village I made an enclosure for my sheep that borders on a raised field of corn. I didn't bother to put up a fence on that side because it is 2 blocks high and the sheep can't get out, but villagers started to drop down into the corral. Currently there are 5 villagers locked in it and they are too stupid to open the gate to get out.
It is convenient for me because if I want to trade with one of them I don't have to go looking for them. Is there any good reason why I should let them out?

If there are brown-coats in the sheep pen, you may want to release them as they will not be farming the village fields…
…not an issue if there are plenty of others and/or you're not using the village to breed villagers.
If you want the villagers for trading, you may find it more convenient (after the initial hassle of moving the villagers ) to keep your trading vilagers in mob-proof, all_transparent_block, 1x1 trading stalls under a lightnig-proof roof (i.e. set up a trading hall). [Mob-proof is for obvious reasons, all_ transparent_blocks helps avoid the villager 'clipping into' the walls and suffocating, lightning-proof (standing on blocks at least 3 below a roof that extends at least 6 to each side) prevents possible witch conversions. Signs telling which villager is good for what trades are useful if you keep more than a few…. Adding a hopper below each villager pointing to an accessible chest is a nice addition on the occasions when one accidently tossses something into the trade stall. (Note that if one carpets the hopper, villagers are too tall to fit into a 2-high minus carpet gap.) ]

Thanks for the replies! I didn't think that I have to worry about zombies since I play in peaceful mode, but it occurs to me that once in a while I do turn on easy mode just to collect some skeleton bones, but I always do that when I am not near a village. I assumed that villagers were safe from zombies if I am not near, but maybe not.
Anyway, danger from lightning is something else I didn't think of. The other day I was walking through the village and a bolt of lightning hit the ground a few blocks away from me and the grass started to burn. There was a house right next to it, so I put the fire out right away.
I don't think I would enjoy building extra enclosures to lock up the villagers, so I think I'll just release them from the pen (I haven't done that yet because sheep would escape, but I can breed new ones) and put up a fence in back so they can't fall in any more.

If you are more than 128 blocks away from the village then zombies will either not spawn at all or will immediately despawn.
(They spawn inside a 256 block cube with you in the center in the X and Z directions and from Y=1 to Y=256 but immediately despawn if they are outside a sphere with a radius of 128 blocks with you in the center.)

I would make sure it's zombie- and lightning- proof, otherwise you're fine unless you want them to breed.
Greetings, Earthling!
