I have built a Zombie Pigman farm using the entity cramming killing system that ilmango explains in at 9:25 in this video:
(To be honest, I do not understand if the minecart with hopper with a block pushed into it is really necessary, and if yes, why.) The Zombie Pigmen do indeed drop XP when they die.
I built the same killing system (tried with butalso without the minecart-hopper-block) for a Guardian farm. They die, drop items that end up in a chest as expected, but no XP.
Are they supposed to drop XP that was as pigmen do?
If yes, do you have some idea why they don’t do that in my built?
Mobs aren't supposed to drop XP unless the player kills them themselves (or hit them within 5 seconds prior to death); if zombie pigmen are dropping XP otherwise then it must be a bug, and indeed, I found such a bug listed on the bug tracker:
A mob will not drop experience unless it dies within five seconds (100 game ticks) of an attack registered as a player hit (including tamed wolves and TNT). This allows gaining experience from, say, knocking a monster off a cliff (fetching the orbs might be another question). You can also try to "claim" a burning monster by hitting or shooting it once—even if the blow doesn't kill it, if the fire does within 5 seconds, it will drop XP. (5 seconds of fire only does 5 damage, but of course you can keep trying.)
I'm pretty sure that Ilmango's gold farm isn't a bug. He's just using the Zombie Pigman's aggro behaviour. He hits one specific pigman on the corner and the rest of the "hoard" gets aggressive towards the player thus counting as aggro-ing all the pigmen.
By doing this, the pigmen that dies on the entity crusher counts as a player kill because pigmen has a herd mentality(hitting one basically means you kinda hit the others too). This allows the pigmen to drop experience upon dying because they suffocate quickly on the entity crusher registering it as a player kill.
Also, it won't work on the guardian farm because the farm only works on the zombie pigmen's unique game mechanic. You need to hit the mob for it to drop experience and loot. In the guardian farm, you have to hit each of the mob for them to register as a player kill unlike the pigmen's herd mentality.
It's sort of intended. The devs patched it out at one point but then patched it in, perhaps they want to add a feature to compensate for the removal of the xp drop?
Yeah the pigman xp mechanic of dropping xp when killed in an angered state is an intentional mechanic and unique to them; no other mobs.
Not according to Mojang, or older version mechanics (e.g. in 1.6.4 they only drop XP if killed by a player); they even attempted to fix it at least once (IDK why they can't fix it, or so many other bugs with very easy fixes, all they need to do is make the XP/rare drop code use the "recentlyHitByPlayer" variable that other mobs use):
Either way, IMO this is a bug since it enables a massive XP farming exploit - XP and rare drops (which should include gold nuggets and any other "mineral" resource; iron, coal, glowstone, redstone, etc) should be earned.

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
That means that so many gold/xp farms are actually exploiting a bug ...
Thank you.
