Alright so I'll be honest, I last played factions in 2013, and even then it was starting to go stale. Factions to me was always the politics and relationships between groups of players. Now it seems to be just donators with £300 kits with some elaborate TNT cannons.
But enough moaning, people have said all this for years and we are all tired of hearing it.
So I've decided to purchase a server and do something about it instead of bitching on the forums.
First off, I'm paying for this server, nobody else. I don't want advantaged donator ranks, or VIP kits rubbish. The biggest problem I've always found in factions is that it's way to easy for paying players to act like demi-god narcissists and rub their /creditcard kit in your face.
Okay so that's the first big problem gone. Now it time for base design.
Okay, so I don't really need to be that qualified to say that your floating obsidian block won't be winning any architecture grand design competitions this year. Your eyesore of a base makes me cringe in places that shouldn't be cringing.
This is because every base design needs to be 100% TNT proof, and the players will do anything to keep their stacks of 64 dirt safe and sound.
This is a tough point to fix though, above all else raiding is at the heart of factions. While I'm tempted to just disable TNT and call it a day and go home. I'm afraid it won't work, as it will be to hard to raid any base then, and with no raiding, no fun.
One idea I've come up with is maybe sacrificing faction power for every TNT you place. This could then make an overclaim counterraid very easy. This dynamic could force players to engage in online raids alot more as offline raid can now be risky.
Or maybe come up with some other ways to lose faction power, disable TNT and have 100% overclaim all the time.
Another way to discourage ugly bases is to reward pretty ones. Weekly design competitions and showcases. Furthermore, maybe a plugin that checks the coordinates and biome of your /f home, and if it's near the surface, aka not bedrock or skybase, then your faction gets some perks. For example if you're near an ocean biome or beach, and between blocks -10 and 20, then your base becomes a trading port and your faction receives discounts at the shop, longer underwater breath etc etc.
Also thinking of making locations of bases public, why bother hiding a base at bedrock or at build limit when everyone can find it easily.
Finally, I don't like overpowered items, so nothing like that. But I am tempted to add some quest lines or treasure hunts. Like maybe have some references to some ancient god or something around the map, put all the clues together, raid a tomb and get a unique overpowered sword. Sword of a thousand truths style.
Got loads of other ideas, really want to break the mould of factions and bring that feeling back that we all had at the start of the decade.
I understand I'll most likely get a grand total of zero players, but as I said I'm paying for this server, so I'm thinking it more of a personal project. With such a low player count I think those quests will be good, as it keeps people occupied between raids.
So that's it for now. I've have other ideas but this post is far to long already.
I'll be happy to here what you think, please tell me where I'm wrong or where I'm right. I'm a bit outdated on the current factions meta so tell me if I'm missing anything obvious. Also what do you think is wrong with factions, and how would you change things?
