Howdy, I am fairly new here. I came here searching for answers about a single question. I just rented a fairly powerful Minecraft server, but I'm stumped on what the theme should be. Oh, and if this isn't the right place to ask this, please guide me. I already have two or three ideas in the books, but I wonder if I could develop something unique to the multiplayer world because I want a server that's fun and has a chance to grow ALOT. I might as well list them below so someone can tell me if they want a server like that. And I know I'm gonna sound like a complete nerd but im not i promise lol
First, I was thinking of a Sandbox Survival experience. It's like a creative world, but you get access to /i (with limitations, of course), /spawner, and a few other commands, all while staying in survival. I know, it sounds overpowered, which it is, but I feel with the right restrictions and plugins, it can actually turn out fun...
Second, I was thinking of just a basic vanilla-esque server. You'll still have Essentials and all that, but no crates or drops or anything. Just a simple server where you play the game like it was meant.
Third, I was thinking of some kind of Mob Invasion type of server, but not zombies. There wouldn't be much difference between it and your average server nowadays, but only that mob would spawn, and lots of them. It sounds basic but I 'm not that creative...
I just want some feedback before I begin the core development process. I want to know what people want in a server, because Im tryna make a big community. oh and congrats if you made it this far lol
My favorites to the day are small community servers without any add-ons--just you and a couple of people goofing around and having fun. Keeping the world limited to something around 1,000 x 1,000 would also literally keep everyone together, which I think can make the world look like it's developing faster since things won't be thousands of blocks apart.
The things I despise in servers are chat spam by the server itself, ranks/god items/perks that only people who pay can get, and no whitelists so anybody can come in and make a mess of things.
Old thread but I don't want to make a new one, so I'm reviving this here.
How about a server where players have their own guilds or corporations and try to become the wealthiest?
Imagine there's three different towns on the map, you have like 300 players, all either employed by a company, by the state or looking for employment. Everyone starts off with basic funds and has to either get a job, join someone's business or make their own.
You can buy or sell products either on the local market or in trading stations.
Rivalry between the companies includes criminal activities (spying, robbery, vandalism, murder and corruption), getting an office in the senate (judge, accountant, major, executioner, chief of the town guard or works committee and representatives), civil cases and economic tricks (price collusion, prohibition, monopolies and cartels, etc.)
It seems like you have good ideas. I think it's easy to make servers not-great today, by adding too many plugins and features that don't make the server better visually or gameplay wise- and just add clutter, and sometimes a reliance on the server for items. I often see servers with too many crates, rewards, kits, NPCs, GUIs, holograms and a sidebar on your screen 24/7 that tells you your hunger (which you can see already), health, money, and ping. I might make a guide for making better/not-bad servers with those sort of topics covered.
The first gamemode idea used to be more popular, and was called Freebuild, as you could get items from [Free] signs but were still in survival. I think it can be pretty fun with the right players.
One other gamemode idea is superflat survival- people would have to gather resources and saplings from villages, and then build up from the superflat. I played it once on a server, and it was pretty fun.
I also highly recommend getting the CoreProtect plugin, which helps you find who griefed and also roll it back (including WorldEdit griefing).
Make the server you want to play on. I guarantee there will be other players that will have similar play styles as you. Just be respectful and fair to your player base and it will grow. These things take time and it will seem like you are failing at first but just keep at it. The longer people see that you have been around for a while they will be more likely to join. Nobody wants to play a 1 month server and have to restart their SMP.

I want a server with diferent minigames.
Such as a death run minigame,
a boat racing minigame with traps and tnt falling.
A room that is slowly flooding with water and you have to escape by trying to find diferent lever combination locks.
a horde of zombies and skeletons are invading a fort and u, with very limited ammo, must hold them off until morning arrives.
if u have any server tell me. I'd be glad to play such.
No what we really need is an RTS minecraft server

I'm willing to review this to death, give suggestions, and fix typos. This would be right up my alley.
