But a slippery slope is that... a fallacy. How are you so sure that Mojang are going to add those gamerules if the pre-1.9 pvp gamerule haven't been added anyway.
Because now that gamerules aren't just for map makers to tinker around with the rules when it's convenient, why wouldn't they?
And? We see no "rant" about poppy to rose lately. 1.9 combat gamerule? well, we can still see them to this day which is why it needs special attention by Mojang since the community is more vocal towards this change unlike the rose to poppy.
It was a controversial issue. It's not so much now, and I don't have much else to compare 1.9 to.
I could say the same for creative mode and raycasting using command blocks and performance enhancement. An improved option is much better than a (Potato) option. Why are you so againts improvement in this game?
No, why are you so against improvement in this game? Why are we not allowed to revamp a combat system that favors good internet connection that can be dominated by armor type rather than skill? Why can't we actually improve the system and instead we have to add legacy support because nobody wants to move forward?
Creative Mode and Raycasting using Command Blocks are new features, and incredibly optional ones too. Performance Enhancement is only bad when it makes modding difficult to do. Nobody is against those things. It's the combat that gets people up in arms, because nobody wants to give up their leet skills in a game.
I haven't played MineTest, (The t is lowercase mumble grumble grrrrr...) but i know for a (dank) sure that people want customizability. It's not that people play games because of customizability, it's that the introduction of customizability in games, especially sandbox games is sometimes desired by many people.
If you want customizability, you should try a game engine. No seriously, because when you're offered every option in the book, you're not making a game anymore. You're gifting them something that could possibly be morphed into a game given enough time, and being allowed to balance it yourself.
For the record, I'm finding I'm not entirely against a gamerule by itself, but the motive to revert gameplay because of nostalgia and not letting Mojang work further on the system is infuriating. Mojang does care about this system, considering they put 2 years of work into it, and it's not like they're going to leave a broken system in the game forever. They've been fixing up a lot of things recently that were broken. (Such as The End being semi-useless to come back to after defeating the Dragon.)
We're getting a new weapon in this new update, and I suspect we're going to get more combat changes soon. I want to see where this is going, rather than keeping a legacy system for people more interested in winning Minecraft Hunger games.
CONSPIRACY THEORY.
I don't see this as the only reason for the combat change obviously, but I think in the back of their minds, Mojang employees were thinking about many servers which were ignoring the EULA by providing exclusive content for paying members. However, if you can still kill people wearing diamond armor using skill, something that can't be sold, you can kinda toll the pay-to-win system.
This is, of course, a ridiculous theory, but I think considering that the system values skills such as staying calm in tight situations and being quick, I think it was at least a thought in the mind of some employee.
And really, skill should have value equal to or near item advantages. Diamond Armor on its own should not make you an indestructible tank.
My avatar is a texture from a small block game I made in Python. It's not very good and it probably won't work if you install it.
I'm very alone in my Minecraft worlds as I don't have a very good internet connection to run a server. If you're like me, you might be interested in my Posse mod suggestion.
Because now that gamerules aren't just for map makers to tinker around with the rules when it's convenient, why wouldn't they?
Or... they could just add this one gamerule. Even if they have those others gamerule. What harm could there possibly be?

Nice strawman. I never said anything about not allowing you or Mojang to revamp the combat system. I'm saying that it would be a lot better if we were given the OPTION to revert.
Creative Mode and Raycasting using Command Blocks are new features, and incredibly optional ones too.
Yes, they're new and optional which proves my point. In the old days, creative mode doesn't exist and when there's people who want to have an OFFICIAL creative mode. People like you use the argument of "Just use mods". See the similarity?
Performance Enhancement is only bad when it makes modding difficult to do. Nobody is against those things.
I'm trying to use your logic of "This can be done with 3rd party mods". So Mojang shouldn't enhance their performance due to the fact that optifine exist.
It's the combat that gets people up in arms, because nobody wants to give up their leet skills in a game
Or maybe we just don't want to be forced to change what is kept for 6 years in the game?

I've beaten a full diamond armored guy with a stone sword and chain armor and guess who wins? Me.

Nice strawman. I never said anything about not allowing you or Mojang to revamp the combat system. I'm saying that it would be a lot better if we were given the OPTION to revert.
You have the option to revert. It's called "Picking an older version in the launcher."
Yes, they're new and optional which proves my point. In the old days, creative mode doesn't exist and when there's people who want to have an OFFICIAL creative mode. People like you use the argument of "Just use mods". See the similarity?
No, I don't. Combat is an essential part of the game. Creative Mode is a new option that is entirely optional and does not dis-benefit people playing Survival. In fact, it benefits them more because maps can be made for them and they can make test worlds for XYZ project. In additon, you don't balance Creative Mode because Creative Mode isn't really a game, it's more like an art program or level editor.
Combat needs to be balanced. It needs to be made fair, and Mojang deserves some control over this aspect of their game.
I'm trying to use your logic of "This can be done with 3rd party mods". So Mojang shouldn't enhance their performance due to the fact that optifine exist.
Except I'm not saying you should just use mods, I'm saying Mojang shouldn't have to keep legacy code around to bloat their game. Nor should we have to keep nostalgic things for nostalgia, that's what old versions are for.
there are no more servers playing the same game singleplayer offers you... Because you could game the system,
Or maybe we just don't want to be forced to change what is kept for 6 years in the game?
Or maybe Mojang has the right to change a broken system that's existed for 6 years in the game?
Because customizability on choices of gameplay and accessibility support for diverse users is equal to code your own game. Stop the strawman
Have you tried it before? Honestly, I've found games to be more fun when I can't screw up the balance. That's why I still play Vanilla Minecraft even when I've downloaded and used mods. (And because I have a crappy computer...)
How does the existence of gamerule makes Mojang not further developed their game?
It seems to me you have the impression just because there's a gamerule, that means Mojang no longer developed the new combat.
Because after Mojang adds a noCooldown gamerule, (which is already possible to make using command blocks so what am I doing with my lief?) then when people are mass murdering the mobs nerfed to fit the difficulty of the new system, you have an unbalanced game. How long before people start asking for that to be balanced?
I've beaten a full diamond armored guy with a stone sword and chain armor and guess who wins? Me.
Great for you, can you beat him the next time though? And when he has enchanted armor? And potions?
>Implying that pre-1.9 combat have no skill.
Skills like... Rapidly clicking a mouse, having a good ping and being able to aim well with the crosshair while moving? (Which, if I had to revamp the current combat system, I'd remove the need to properly aim the crosshair like that. It makes killing baby zombies impossible.)
My main objections to a gamerule are:
A) Gamerules are meant for mapmaking, not rule changing. Old features can be accessed in old versions. C) If there's an option to revert a feature, other feature removal options may follow and result in a mess of unsupported, or possibly buggy, forms of gameplay produced by changing gamerules. D) You can already do this to an extent using command blocks, so what would be the point?
E) Why can't we just move forward? Take off the nostalgia glasses and look at the combat system for what it's worth. It's far better in the long run.

It does seem like the thread is wandering from a "What kind of update would bring back the Golden Age?" to "Let's argue 1.9 combat again."
1) I'm not clear that this is NOT the "Golden Age" in any sense that isn't subjective opinion based on cherry-picked data.
2) The OP for the discussion isn't "what specific game rule (cough-1.9 combat-cough) but what "update" would bring about this subjective sense of "Golden Age."
3) It would appear as if "The Great Flattening" will allow in Vanilla "not Minecraft" blocks, mods, effects, and so on. The changes to the core are going to allow for "datapack.zip" files to do many of the things from a single file that before were only possible with Spigot plugins, Forge mods, or other various sorts of non-Vanilla hacking.
4) Already, https://github.com/xMamo/minecraft-barebones (one such data-pack file) is starting to edge towards features that before were only possible with complex manual setup of command blocks or found as part of the Essentials Plugin with Spigot. I can read through and hack away at BareBones to learn how to make my own "mods" without having to deal with Java issues.
""jebkaile - Mixer" (dead link)" "We are changing the world generator. The actual world will more or less look the same, but the way it's generated, it's all data-driven, so you can make your own generator settings in json files." We are on the cusp of something like "Land of Dragora" world generation in VANILLA from player created structures and player-created .json files for world generation. Imagine... No Spigot, no Forge, just "insert data package, run the game."
For all the argument over a single /gamerule to affect one single aspect of the game, I strongly believe we are on the cusp of far greater worlds to play in with community-driven content than were ever possible without the overhead and complexity of tinkering with Plugins and Mods.
Yet here we are arguing over a single (albeit major) change in combat still being argued to this day in other threads with no end in sight. The "game rule" is likely going to be "put this 1.9-combat.zip file in your data-packs folder and call it done." THEN will we be able to discuss something other than Mojang putting in a gamerule for this thing? Oooops, sorry. Already done.
NOW can we talk about something besides adding a /gamerule to toggle what you can do by adding a single file to your Minecraft world?

Ships of any kind would be revolutionary, especially since the Update Aquatic just came out. Both of our ideas allow for vast customization, a whole new progression system, and a new reason to gather building supplies. In my opinion, they would restore Minecraft to its golden age.

Romaq, I think they mean it to be a simple gamerule with the need to dowload datapacks. For example: /gamerule doWeaponCooldown false - that would make it so the mechanics would be like 1.8 again.
Though I don’t really have a problem with the new combat update I know a lot of people do and a adding a simple thing like that would please a lot of the PvP community.

I believe Mojang Redmond has been holding off adding Shields, Sweeping Edge, and other "Java Combat" issues because Mojang Redmond and Mojang Stockholm want to roll out combat that will solve the reasons they switched to the 1.9 style to begin with while pleasing the 1.8 combat crowd. I believe there are already quotes to that effect, but if this is what Mojang as a whole intends to do, there is NOTHING to gain by putting in a /gamerule switch. I'm not following the combat proposals and other discussions for future releases, as I don't do PVP and I'm not clueful about it. I defer to AntVenom's proposed changes to have combat make much more sense. But given already stated intentions of "getting the Combat formula right", making a switch confuses the issue, it doesn't solve the problems with 1.8 combat that put them on the 1.9 track to begin with, and it will complicate the future rollout of combat for both Bedrock and Java Editions.
But there are 1.8 combat mods aplenty for anyone wanting to play a current edition, including an easy data-pack. I'm not clear why this isn't good enough for now and why people can't simply participate in the combat discussion beyond, "JUST MAEK A 1.8 SWITCH NOW!" Demanding we go backwards isn't a good formula for moving forwards.

Good point,
I never really thought about the editions of shields and sweeping attacks. As I said before, I am not hateful of the changes: only curious of what changes could be made to them in the future. Though I would like to see an treasure enchantment that could speed up the cooldown on and item; it would bring another interesting change that might enable servers like hypixel to move forward into newer updates
