I'm new here, just started really playing Minecraft along with my wife and we've noticed something that I can't seem to figure out.
On my Realms server, I recently built a large mob falling damage trap. It works great for me - it literally rains monsters like crazy. It still works, even when my wife logs on and is standing next to me under the trap. However, when I move away from the trap and my wife stays at the trap, it stops spawning mobs. If I leave the server, it's starts raining like crazy again.
I exported the world and then created a home Java server and imported my world. Same results as above. I checked the view distance (10 - increased it to 12), it was in survival, difficulty was normal, mob spawning was true...
Am I missing a setting? This behavior seems odd to have mobs spawn for me but not for her.
One of those "is it plugged in" type questions, but have you checked that she is in survival mode (& not on peaceful) {also, that her render distance is >10 [not sure if it's possible for this to be an issue with Realms, but an easy check]}
Have you tested what happens with any other players? (If it works for only you, I would look at how your player profile differs from average. If it works for everone but your wife, how see hers does.)

I'd swear that I checked over everything but, I'll check it again. The world is no longer on Realms, I pulled it off and created a home server to use instead. Mob spawners work fine for her. I have a trap built around a zombie spawner that works fine for both of us, regardless if I'm on the server with her and near the trap. I thought her settings might be on peaceful, but if I leave the server, the mob trap works for her, it's only if I'm online and away from the trap.
Just to note, when we created this world it was default vanilla. When I was building the trap, I kind of built it the wrong way, from top to bottom... so I was getting rained on with creepers, etc. while I was finishing up the bottom. It was impossible to finish the project so I used /gamerule doMobSpawning false to turn it off until I completed the trap and then entered the command again with true. That is the only setting I have messed with.
Does the trap work for her if you log out? If so, the issue is plain ol' mob-spawning mechanics relative to server play. Basically, the more spread out the players the higher the likelihood that some players just don't get any spawns at all because someone happens to be in an area with lots of unlit caves underground (in other words, the ratio of spawnable spaces around one player is higher than around another player and therefore that player is more likely to get the spawns). When all players are occupying the same set of loaded chunks, mobs will spawn there pretty much because they have nowhere else to.
as DuhDerp said your issue is most likely caused by mob spawning being split between the two of you, the solution is to torch all the caves and everything around you or use a modified server jar like Spigot to raise the mob cap (which you cant do on a realm)

Any advice would be highly appreciated!

Well, off to check those settings again.
