Hmmm....there was never a version of PC Minecraft with a version number of 2.1.X.....do you think it could've been 1.2.X instead?
I say this because the only time a version of Minecraft was 2.X was Minecraft 2.0 - but that was an april fools joke.
Anyway, if you wish to play an older version of Minecraft, it is totally possible via the (new) launcher. Once the launcher is opened, you should see "Launcher options" somewhere on it, click on that, then on the launcher options screen there should be a drop-down menu titled "Versions"-select the version you want from the menu. Save the profile and it should appear on the Play button in the launcher (if it doesn't, click on the arrow next to the play button to select it). Then press play.
You can downgrade to any (most except for the really old ones) previous versions, but 2.1.x has never existed. If you want to do version 1.2.1, as I think you mean, there are plenty of tutorials. I would suggest catching up on the new combat mechanics and features, though, because a lot of great updates have happened over 5 years.
I would like to purchase Minecraft after not playing it for at least 5 years, but I would like to play version 2.1. Can I downgrade to that legally?
As far as I'm aware, "2.1" is not a legit version of Minecraft. What platform are you looking to play Minecraft on?
PC on Windows. I suppose I may be wrong but I remember playing on something like "2.1.5" distinctively.
In case it's confusing, I'm simply using 2.1 to describe anything that is 2.1.X

You can find more information here.
Hope that helps.
Definitely run each version in it's own directory to avoid corrupting a world!
Just testing.

Pretty sure you're thinking about final 1.2.5
Based.
