With 1.13 rolling around somewhat soon, I've been thinking about the potential custom recipes that could be made with the new custom recipe system. More specifically, I've been trying to come up with recipe changes or additions that would make the game harder.
What changes to recipes can you come up with? (Example: Iron blocks required to craft iron armor instead of iron ingots)
I like the idea, in fact I've already done some of this with commands. Flint and steel is a little op, and there is next to no reason to craft fire charges. Instead, flint and steel could be crafted with an extra diamond. (Diamond because it is usually used to toughen steel) crafting tables could be crafted with logs. Furnaces with a clay block in the middle of the cobble. Bows with two slime and a leather added to the original recipie. Logs could yield 1-2 planks instead. Or planks could with crafted by 4 logs, resulting in 16 planks. And so much more. Really excited for 1.13/1.14.

Most of these don't really make the game harder, but just more annoying. For example, making crafting tables require 4 logs to craft would be pointless and annoying.
I don't know yet how they will be implemented, but if possible, I would change the book recipie to use bark block in place of leather. It would require a lot more wood in the eventual making of bookcases, but it would mean one doesn't have to kill cows. I appreciate not everyone cares about that, but if the game does turn out to allow recipies like that, it could allow different styles of play.

Yeah, I guess so. But then again, are they annoying because they are difficult, or is it just an extra step? Sometimes there is a fine line. I suppose I made the game a little more complicated, but not really difficult. Would the following* might be better suited, or just more complicated? It can be hard to tell. -*Doors require logs, an iron block, glass, and a redstone block- Sorry for the misunderstanding!
If you want really hard... Remove all recipes for anything that you can trade with villagers for. Or make is so that the only tools and weapons that you can craft are wood or stone and the only armor that you can craft is leather. All the rest you have to get either by trading with villagers or by mob drops.

Check out my suggestions! Here is one of them:
