I do; in fact, I've never, ever played the game in any other way, even the sole map that I have played on (a fancy version of Skyblock) was based on Survival:
Otherwise, my form of Survival is one of the simplest there is; the vast majority of my time is spent running through caves, mining resources and killing mobs. Any mods that I use do not detract from this, if anything, they reinforce it (more varied caves, more and more interesting mobs). I use next to no redstone (does using powered rails on redstone blocks or placing a button next to a door to open it really count?) and have next to no building skills (this is my latest base, basically a copy of a village house, many of my other bases are even simpler). I've also played this way for over four years with over 5,000 hours of playtime, it is also one reason why I have never upgraded past 1.6 (newer versions detract from my experience as well; less interesting caves in 1.7+ and a lower mob cap and nerfed zombies in 1.8+).
I've never heard that phrase used to mean anything good. But anyway - I'm almost certain more people play survival than any other mode of MC; I think you're wrong to think "most play for mods, servers, and building". Well...servers, perhaps, but survival servers. And some of those have limited mods, but are still basically "vanilla".
Survival Minecraft is incredibly popular.
I wonder if there's a way we could test any of this?
Based on this Survival is up to a dozen times more popular than Creative, still 5 times if only thread count is compared. There's even more posts in Survival than general discussion. Most of the threads are also about singleplayer worlds.
Also, the only thing "special" about me is my playstyle, and even then there are other players who have mined hundreds of thousands of resources (one of them even builds towers out of mineral blocks as a way to show off how much they've mined - of course, as suggested by that they actually build as well as mine).
Dinnerbone has released some statistics last year that showed that the divide between people playing Single and Multiplayer at that time was pretty much 50/50. While its nothing concrete, it's safe to tp assume that a large majority of the people who play singleplayer play Survival, since it's kinda tough to PvP on your own.
I'd say they're playing singleplayer creative, or just building in survival.
No, they're bundling them together in a new game with a stronger, more polished engine that is easier for them to work on and performs better than Minecraft Java overall.
Minecraft Java is far from a masterpiece, and becomes slower and more bloated with every new update. It was never built to be a big and succesful game, and it is slowly starting to show that. Building a new and better version of Minecraft allows Mojang to continue working on the game, without it becoming completely unplayable.
If you have a PC that has trouble running Minecraft Java smoothly, try Minecraft WIndows 10 Edition once, to see how much better that performs.
Go play our much better edition of Minecraft, because the pocket edition is much more eye-goughing"polished".
The community is just as great, as long as you're under 9.
Oh and don't worry about downloading maps, buy them instead with coins like in many crappy mobile games! It's a great change in a better direction!
Actually, I run bot the Java edition and the Windows 10 Edition on my PC, and Win10 consistently performs better and more stable, with higher graphic settings at all times.
And the resource pack I have downloaded and installed for free looks pretty neat as well
I don't really understand what's being said in this thread, but Java edition certainly has far higher graphical options; with the price of ludicrous resource usage.
minecraft you have disappointed me, (see what i did there it brings back the infamous 1.8 thread)
as i mainly play minecraft on Xbox one, but i refuse to play the better together update, but this game has gone so much down hill, from where i started (beta) to what it is now, its really disappointing, from a survival game to some random RPG really.

For those that are saying Java has no 'Micro-Transactions' yes it does! Have any of y'all been on a public server recently, the server market is flooded with these things. But, they're optional purchases, as are the purchases on Bedrock. If you don't want to buy a resource pack with coins, find one someone ported, or made, and use that. Don't like any of the default skins, upload your own. It's literally the exact same thing on a different edition, so... just chill. XD
Im aware, but i can just refuse to go to their cash grab and have fun here with my mods. I doubt Microsofts Minecraft will survive the stand of time, while java minecraft stands good chances to have a dedicated fan base keeping it alive with mods and stuff loong after its relase. Like seriously, its got a good chance to become one of the classics so to speak.
I think it's safe to say it's already a classic, and has been for years. My fear is though that the lack of direction in some areas of PC's development, and MS's intervention with the BTU editions are going to shorten its overall lifespan. I can still see this being played years upon years into the future granted there's no DRM crap added, even if it's just a handful. I think digital Legos is a good analogy for creative-mode Minecraft. I just find it... Legitimately sad, how it seems a lot of players have left the Java edition. Heck, a lot of people who used to go on the forums haven't touched it in years.

The forums are just less active. The actual game is as popular is ever. It's just not as much of a pop culture icon today.
It's like Overwatch in this regard. Right now, Overwatch is huge. Soon, the memes and videos and nsfw art will slow down, and Overwatch will still be played by millions, it's just no longer in the spotlight for the masses to constantly talk about.

To say that the forums are less active is a big understatement; I can't really see how there can be only a few dozen posts per day in forums like Discussion, Suggestions, and Survival Mode, each with more than a million posts, given the size of the community (Mojang claimed there were 55 million monthly unique players earlier this year, out of a total of 122 million copies, meaning that 45% of everybody who bought the game still played it at least once a month). I've also look at archived pages to confirm the decline, which has been going on for years and has worsened with time; the forums must have been really crazy years ago, to the point of having to go back several pages just to find threads that were created within the past day (recently I saw threads with no activity for the past 7 days on the first page in Survival Mode, the longest I can remember). I've also see many old-time members with high post counts stop visiting the forums recently; these members tend to drive much of the activity due to their high participation (the average member has made only 6 posts over the entire time they've been active; I even have followers who have 0 posts and have not been online since the day they signed up).
With all due respect, you're a special case.

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?

Little kids are getting scammed out of their monies for things that PC people get for free :'(
This is unacceptable.

Big corporations want money. Java has no dlcs or microtransactions, so of course microsoft wants java to leave.
