Microsoft creates all the copyright decisions they make, decisions that KILL every creative possibility that Minecraft offers! , I'm talking about comissioned maps, which are FORBIDDEN. The only creative possibility left by Microsoft with the game is the possibility to create videos and upload them ! So nice !
Then let's talk about servers which offer additionnal content on top of the game itself. Now these servers have to find solutions to stay ALIVE because Microsoft says "You can either exist without the possibility to offer exclusive content to earn money or you are blacklisted !", and at the same time these same servers are invited to MineCon to show how cool things made with Minecraft can be ! That's so nice !
So um just so you Know Microsoft isn't doing anything Mojang is still in charge of the development of Minecraft. Microsoft Didn't Buy Minecraft they bought Mojang for the money Minecraft would make them.
Maybe you are thinking of the Console Edition, which has always forbidden maps and mods on all consoles (including non-Microsoft consoles) for reasons unrelated to Microsoft (the only maps and mods allowed on any consoles are ones that are designed around a built-in API, which Minecraft does not have).
Also, servers are only forbidden to sell items that affect gameplay; you can still charge $1000 for a fancy name and cosmetic effects if you want - or for admission to the server, as long as everybody has to pay and gets full access without having to pay anything else. In fact, Mojang actually relaxed the EULA, which at face value forbids any form of making money off of the game - and has since well before Microsoft ever came into play:
How often am I allowed to charge players to access my server?
You can charge players as regularly as you like. You can even charge for timed access if you think it’s the best way to monetise your server.
So can I charge for my minigames or mods?
Yes, so long as all players on your server have access to the features.
Can I sell “kits” for hard currency if I provide a balanced alternative for non-paying users?
If the “kits” contain gameplay-affecting features they are not allowed. Gameplay balance is not relevant to the EULA. If the items included in the kit are purely cosmetic, you can charge real money/hard currency.
Can I sell ranks on my server?
Yes. Ranks are allowed so long as any perks gained are cosmetic. Coloured names, prefixes, special hats etc. are fine.
(etc)
So really, you can still easily make money - even off of maps and mods (the second item) - and don't forget that the EULA completely forbid it before (and at face value still does):
Updated: 28 November 2013 08:16
So the one major rule is that (unless we specifically agree it – such as in brand and asset usage guidelines) you must not:
give copies of our Game to anyone else;
make commercial use of anything we‘ve made;
try to make money from anything we‘ve made;
or let other people get access to anything we‘ve made in a way that is unfair or unreasonable.
…and so that we are crystal clear, what we have made includes, but is not limited to, the client or the server software for our Game. It also includes modified versions of a Game, part of it or anything else we‘ve made.
I think most people are only reading the EULA (the current EULA says nearly the same thing under "one major rule") and immediately assume that making money is completely forbidden; Mojang should amend it to include the aforementioned exceptions (the word "server" only appears twice in the current EULA and only as "client and server software").
1- Mojang changed the EULA before MS entered the picture. MS had nothing to do with it.
2- I'm sure MS "nudged" Mojang to create Win10 and update PE along side. PE would still be "PE-like" if it wasn't for Win10. But MC needed a multi-platform, multi-edition version. Why is that a bad thing? Other than that, it's been "business as usual" and the other editions haven't been affected by MS at all. In fact, MS has allowed Mojang to add a competitors console edition (Switch). The whole "MS will ruin MC!" fear some had turned out to be just that- fear only and not reality. (If Sony bought Mojang, then I'd be worried!) MS has been very restrained (more than I would have) and kept the "hands off and let Mojang do it's thing" philosophy.
Nah, all microsoft gets is money they dont add features only mojang does and no microsoft is not killing minecraft and minecraft isnt dying there are billions of copies sold every day so no PE and Console Prices are coming up while PC is at Average also the more new consoles = more new minecraft versions which means more money and orders that means microsoft isnt killing minecraft. its just that playing the same thing over and over again will make people lose interest.... and alot of them lost interests when 1.9 came out. so the updates kill minecraft 24% while 96% brings awesomeness to it....
Now my Answer is the Answer Minecraft IS NOT DYING so can we stop this question? and this thread should be closed now
The topic of this thread is not about whether Minecraft is dying, it is whether Microsoft's ownership of Mojang has had a negative effect on Minecraft. This is a legitimate topic and will not be closed just because of the subject.
2- I'm sure MS "nudged" Mojang to create Win10 and update PE along side.
This is the only direct, if you want to call it that, result that's probably come from Microsoft acquiring Mojang as far as the state of the game itself goes. You could argue the slower updates around that time were an effect of that too, and it's likely they partly were, but those updates were also larger than usual anyway which is probably a bigger reason. I prefer the smaller but steadier updates we had before, and have now personally though, but it's incredible how much the game keeps updating anyway. Maybe it meant the game would be in a different place content-wise and update-wise if they hadn't had that side-track (again, if you want to call it that), but I wouldn't imagine it's been much of a difference if so, and on the whole, it's been one of the most hands off interference I've seen. If this original Java version starts suffering or being left to die, then I'd start worrying.
Have you seen the new Minecraft Marketplace, its just a money ripoff that Microsoft demands in order to get more money.
The Minecraft Marketplace is for the Windows 10 and MCPE Editions of Minecraft, not for the Java version. This forum section is for discussing the Java version. Please stay on-topic. If you wish to critique the Minecraft Marketplace, please post a thread in the Windows 10 Edition or MCPE Discussion forum sections.
Well, after the arrival of Microsoft into the game, Mojang adds a lot of controversial stuff (glazed terracotta, 1.9 combat) which hurts the game.
glazed terracotta are fancy, concrete blocks are good and 1.9 combat adds realism. No one wants a guy pvping with a gaming mouse, assuming it has turbo click button included like mine, cuz its real unfair. Microsoft didnt hurt the game, end of story

Sure, you can say any good thing about 1.9 all you want. I'm not focusing on how good 1.9 is or how is it require less skill. But what i'm focusing is how Microsoft arrival made controvertial feature. For better or worse, it's up to the player. But this feature hurts the community.

Ok so your talking about the new EULA? Im currently loving it cuz it removes the P2W Servers. cuz Im not the guy willing to pay for some in-game features
But there's an even easier way to debunk this myth about the "big bad Microsoft". According to Microsoft as well as the (public) financial records which detail the takeover Mojang (the company) had been writing up quite a few losses already. One could even argue that Mojang might not have been around today if it wasn't for Microsoft buying the company.
Mojang was quite profitable before Microsoft purchased them. From this article:
Five years after its initial release, the video game Minecraft is still bringing in huge revenue for its developer, Mojang AB. The Swedish video game company reported that its revenue increased to 2.07 billion Swedish kronor (or $330 million) in 2013, a 38 percent increase from the previous year, according to the Wall Street Journal. The company pulled in 816 million kronor ($129 million) in profit.

Just wanna add. I think microsoft prohibiting commisioned builds, or maps are not a totally bad idea. Im a builder myself and I dont see any bad thing in here. What I think here is mojang is balancing everything. Not everyone is willing to pay for this maps, not me atleast. And the riches, would have advantage over the poor(ish) people. Hope you get what I meant

There's no way to tell from that article. Although there was plenty of revenue that doesn't tell you anything about the actual profits. Mojang was a private company, and therefor didn't have to release financial records. And unless you know what costs were involved with the company there's no way to conclude that they made a profit. As said, I only base myself on statements made by Microsoft after the takeover which clearly suggested that Mojang also had to cope with losses from time to time.
Something which I thing is quite plausible considering the fact that Mojang worked on more besides Minecraft alone. And not every one of their projects was as successful as Minecraft was.
The article specifically states that Mojang had $330 million in revenue and $129 million in profits for 2013. It states that in the first paragraph. If you follow the link in the article to the source article, they state that Mojang specifically gave that information to the Wall Street Journal.

Hi, you are a cool person!
Nope. Unless they start monetizing it with their stupid ads.
You have some serious misunderstandings about Microsoft, or the EULA, which has nothing to do with them.
So, how come there is still a section for mapping and modding on these forums?
http://www.minecraftforum.net/forums/mapping-and-modding
Maybe you are thinking of the Console Edition, which has always forbidden maps and mods on all consoles (including non-Microsoft consoles) for reasons unrelated to Microsoft (the only maps and mods allowed on any consoles are ones that are designed around a built-in API, which Minecraft does not have).

https://web.archive.org/web/20131210231416/http://account.mojang.com/documents/minecraft_eula
Note the date on that - it wasn't until nearly a year later that Microsoft acquired Mojang, or anything was mentioned of it:
https://mojang.com/2014/09/yes-were-being-bought-by-microsoft/
Here is an article that clarifies what you can/can't do with regards to server monetization:
https://mojang.com/2014/06/lets-talk-server-monetisation-the-follow-up-qa/
In particular:
So really, you can still easily make money - even off of maps and mods (the second item) - and don't forget that the EULA completely forbid it before (and at face value still does):
I think most people are only reading the EULA (the current EULA says nearly the same thing under "one major rule") and immediately assume that making money is completely forbidden; Mojang should amend it to include the aforementioned exceptions (the word "server" only appears twice in the current EULA and only as "client and server software").
TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
1- Mojang changed the EULA before MS entered the picture. MS had nothing to do with it.
2- I'm sure MS "nudged" Mojang to create Win10 and update PE along side. PE would still be "PE-like" if it wasn't for Win10. But MC needed a multi-platform, multi-edition version. So has MS hurt MC?
No way. If anything, they've helped MC.
