The one issue I have is that the message log thing seems to eventually just stop updating and clear out but I'm not sure if that is an issue with the launcher or not.

the computer I am using to play Minecraft isn't beefy, launcher work just okay, I think it your side that is causing the problem, try reinstalling Minecraft to see if that work.
Why?
Because almost everytime I click "Play" THIS DAMN LAUNCHER CRASHES ALL THE TIME.
MOJANG HASN'T EVEN BOTHERED TO FIX THIS ISSUE AT ALL!!!!!

UNLESS THE ISSUE IS FIXED, THEN ONLY PEOPLE WITH BEEFY PCS CAN PLAY IT, WITHOUT THE ISSUE HAPPENING....
Then how come I can play 200+ mods on a 3-year-old laptop that cost me $800 only atm?
MY MODPACK! ~300 MODS! 1.10.2-1.12.2, 1.15.2!
it is junk of a launcher - it doesn't give me the crash log. maybe it doesn't work with forge?
i had to dig out the old launcher, disconnect from the net just in case and run the old one to see what crashes.
@original poster: i'm sure machine strength has nothing to do with it.
I've switched to MultiMC because the new launcher is so buggy. PC specs have nothing to do with it.
