The folder, which is time-stamped 2016 (hence when I moved it around, so file time stamps are useless here), says "Cool Saves from 2012". But when I tried picking the nearest likely Minecrafts, the save format seems completely different, and they won't pick up the save folders at all.
What I've got is a bunch of save folders that each have a couple dozen folders named 0, 1, 1a, 1b, ... 1r, 2, 3, 4, ... 16, 17, etc. Inside these folders are a bunch of similarly named folders. Each folder holds a single file, like c.-f.-8.dat
The base folder also contains level.dat, level.dat_old, and session.lock
So... which Minecraft version are these from? Or are these something else? The names of the folders (Lost Cave Start, Stairs Upon Stairs, House of Snow, I Fail to Get Lost, etc.) make me think they've got cool map bits that I'd love to see again and remember the runs I had, but I can't do that unless I can open up the save files somehow. Anyone got a clue for me?

My YouTube channel is currently on hiatus, but I hope to get back to it at some point. Content is fairly random, but can be enjoyable, and is mostly game footage (mostly random Minecraft clips) from my nephews and me. Most popular MC vid so far is the one Vechs laughed at on Twitter!
Just pointing out, in case you didn't know, that you should definitely make copies to test with.
You can mess up a world by opening it with an earlier version of Minecraft than it was saved in if the world generation was changed in between.
And I can see how you might lose all the data if the file format was changed but the older version still was able to open it but messed it up when saving again. (I don't know if that might happen or not, just guessing there.)
Based on the folder names you have a very old world from InfDev through early Beta since that was how those very early versions organized chunk files (using separate files for each chunk, not region files):
You should be able to load the world in Beta 1.3, which will convert it to MCRegion, then in Release 1.2.1-1.6.4 to convert it to Anvil (I don't know if it still works as of 1.11.2 but versions up to at least 1.6.4 can convert MCRegion to Anvil). While the game keeps copies of the older format files make a backup just to be safe before doing this; make sure that there also isn't a "region" folder already present (this would mean that you already converted the world at least to MCRegion; the files within this folder will have the extension .mcr for MCRegion and .mca for Anvil, with both present if you did both conversions. After you do convert you can delete all the older files).
Be aware that such old versions did not save biome data with the save files (until Anvil) and if you convert them you'll get odd results when the game changes a snowy biome to a desert and vice-versa (snow and ice won't melt since only block light affects them but they will form/accumulate), along with the colors of vegetation, and if you explore new areas you'll get chunk walls where terrain generation changed.
Okay, so... how do I make a Beta 1.3 Minecraft build? The launcher used to go all the way back to the first Minecraft version, but this newer launcher seems to only allow versions starting with the official release.
Would it be easier to like open these with MC Edit or something?

I don't have a clue.

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
