I would say that 1.8 is when things went wrong. First off, Mojang was sold to Microsoft. As if that's not bad enough as it is, Minecraft Forge changed "vital API" (quote from mod developers) and the amount of good mods for 1.8 decreased. I'm not saying that good mods don't exist on 1.8 or higher, I'm saying that large and great mods like MC Helicopters and Call to Battle among others didn't update to 1.8 because of Forge API changes. Then, 1.9 came around and ruined combat, 1.10 came out (wait...did anything change in 1.10? I can't remember...), followed by 1.11 (can't remember what changed either) and never gave the modding community time to breathe. Now since I'm not a mod developer myself, I can't tell exactly how hard it is to update a mod from 1.8 to 1.11, but I know some mod developers which refuse to update to 1.8. Mods in post-1.7.10 have been overcome with "command block creations". Now I have nothing against command blocks themselves, or the creations. But I do not like "command block creations" as a replacement for great mods. Other than the mods and Microsoft owning Mojang, 1.9 and 1.10 and 1.11 just don't seem to add that much. Shields are too fragile to make a good enough impact, the End being redesigned (at some point, but I can't remember if it was 1.9 or 1.10...or 1.11...) doesn't really impact the over all experience that much, and the two new mobs that were added...the Shulker and the other one...just don't seem that interesting or revolutionary. Minecraft, from 1.8 to 1.11, doesn't seem to have changed all that much to be worthy of the jump in version numbers.
You see, the problem with this poll here is that those who see this poll are those who regularly go onto the Minecraft forum, and almost all those people are the ones who love Minecraft still, even though (despite what they might say) it is in slow decline. Those left are mainly the ones who will love good ol' Minecraft forever. The people who really do think Minecraft went bad at some point don't attend this forum anymore
Good point. I'll have to consider that when I tell everyone about the results of my poll.
1.8: A ton of new blocks and mechanics. The enchanting and trading overhaul opened up a lot of possibilities and made some much needed changes, and they added prismarine which quickly became one of my favorite blocks.
1.9: Combat became more fun, and they added mending, which means I can spend more time building and less time repairing my tools. After playing for as long as I have, mining has become a bit of a chore.
1.10: More amazing building blocks. Red nether brick is also on my top ten favorite building blocks, along with prismarine, dark oak and stained clay.
1.11: Shulker boxes and elytra flying are some of the best improvements this game has ever seen.
1.12: Not one, not two, not even twenty, but 63 new building blocks (concrete, concrete dust, terracotta, and the 15 new shades of beds). We also get parrots, which spice up the jungle quite a bit, and the ability to add custom recipes.

Minecraft went bad not because of the updates. Its because of the players. When in multiplayer there are lots of kids that are really toxic and ruins your day. Just saying

Yeah, that guy in the avatar is me. I'm *that* strange. It happens. Sometimes people act like that. Just go with it. I can offer help with suggestions even before you post them - NOT make your suggestions - but help you with them.
I'm not going to say MC was ever particularly ruined, but 1.8's "optimizations" hurt everyone that doesn't have a shiny new computer, and 1.7's biome generation changes killed exploration value and the former good look of the terrain. (MasterCaver for this very reason has not updated beyond 1.6.)
By "shiny new computer" you must also mean my wife's 5 year old i3 laptop with basic Intel graphics that gets 60 FPS max settings with 12 chunk view distance.

Minecraft never went bad, people just hate changes.
Or sometimes they just have different preferences. I agree that Minecraft didn't go "bad" though.
For some weird reason it seems popular to blame "nostalgia" these days. I've been playing video games since the '80s and still own an NES and several of my original games for it from back then. To me, Minecraft is a newer game, even though it's considered an older game now by some.
I don't have to specify that I'm talking about the "Java" version yet though, right?

Minecraft never went bad, and never will be. It's a beloved game, and it will be that way for centuries. Not even Microsoft sucking its soul dry will stop it from being a popular game.
Take a look at ROBLOX. It's made far more bad updates than Minecraft has and will ever have, and it's still making merch. And I think that settles my point.

Yo. I'm SuperPigMineCrafter AKA minebuilder82.
I make builds and redstone creations, and I'm getting into commands and map making.
I also make great animations using Mine-Imator.
Check out my animations down below. I've made 3 so far.
"Bad" is subjective, and is based on your own opinion. Nobody else can tell you whether or not something is (in terms of gameplay, of course) bad or not. They can say that they thought it was good or bad, or whether or not they enjoyed it, but that is just their opinion.
Honestly, I feel like needless pessimism, like this, is what makes people think Minecraft can go "bad". If people looked optimistically at updates, there would be much less of this "Minecrfat is die?!" attitude.
(Granted, there are some things that are objectively bad, such as increased RAM usage or lower framerates. Those things don't have to do with gameplay, though.)

My avatar is a texture from a small block game I made in Python. It's not very good and it probably won't work if you install it.
I'm very alone in my Minecraft worlds as I don't have a very good internet connection to run a server. If you're like me, you might be interested in my Posse mod suggestion.
Minecraft went bad the moment Microsoft was able to get their hands on it, not trying to rag on Microsoft because from a financial point of view it's a genius idea but the moment they got the rights to it and began adding their own DLC content that costs real money.
I don't know, i actually only played 1.9 once and never again, im at 1.8 most of my time. Thats why i started creating a "New 1.8 Version" with Community Based Ideas but i'll always keep an eye on if things even fit into Minecraft
In my opinion terracotta blocks don't fit to minecraft, they are to colorful
Almost the same i think about the Concrete Blocks they added, Block Gravitation Physics only were used for Sand/Gravel, not for Solid Blocks
Also i don't think the Elytra fits into Minecraft, maybe if they would have done their work different and not implement Rocket Elytra Flight it would have fit
But well, when they first introduced hunger and sprinting into Minecraft i tought the same.
only concrete powder (which basically is colored sand) has gravitation physics. Concrete doesn't have that

I don't know. Bought it recently and so far been having a blast!
Minecraft has never been more interesting.

I guess minecraft isn't dying. 2/3 of the people still say minecraft never went bad:
Minecraft went bad not because of the updates. Its because of the players. When in multiplayer there are lots of kids that are really toxic and ruins your day. Just saying
I wouldn't say "bad," but I voted 1.9, since I generally prefer hosting and playing 1.8.9, as it plays and feels more like classic Minecraft to me.

It didn't go bad.
