For a project that I'm working on, I needed to create a solid black map by building a square of black wool. I was able to do this but now I want to delete the black wool since its no longer needed for the project. However, I decided to place some stone on top of the black wool just to make sure that the maps wouldn't change but they did. Is there a way to delete the wool but not have the maps change? They were placed in item frames if that changes anything. Thanks in advance!
If you make the black wool far away from where the map is being viewed from, it won't update. A way around this could be to create a map of a far away place that you never visit and make the black map there.
You only need to be outside of the area the map displays, plus 128 blocks, the update radius; in other words, a level 0 (128x128 blocks or +/- 64 from the center) map centered at 0,0 will only update if a player is within a 384x384 block area centered around 0,0 (a 64 + 128 block radius. The area is more like square with rounded corners since the update radius is a circle while the map area is a square).
The only catch is that you must ensure that the player can never reach the area where you centered the map, but I assume that if they did they would be breaking the rules of the map (the world border can be set to keep them within it).
Also, maps in item frames should not update anyway; they only update if held by a player, although you have to hold it to place them in an item frame so you'd have to be sure that you'll never need to place them again.
So, as long as I don't hold the map, the ones that I placed won't change? I hope you're right since I really don't want to have to build another massive square of black wool.

Vanilla maps will always show the current terrain however there is a way to make custom map items.
It should be clear there.

So basically, I'm stupid.
So building another square that's far enough away will make the map never change even if I delete the square? If so, how far away should I go?

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
