Far from it, Players come and go that's just how things are, Minecraft is a timeless game that will always have a audience, Minecraft cant really even die, Servers can be hosted by anybody at any time,
Even if for whatever reason Mojang ceases to be, Microsoft would just merge our accounts into xbox-live or something, Even if they didn't the community would create alternative ways to play the game.
I first started playing Minecraft in 2010, when I was 11. I was playing 5-6 hours of it a day, not necessarily on the same world or server, but always playing something somewhere somewhen. I must have made some one thousand worlds when I was younger, played on an equal number of servers, and my daily routine was usually eat, minecraft, break, minecraft, then sleep. I befriended many people, among them some who I still talk to seven years later (although to what extent varies). The thing that bothered me when I was younger was that friends whom I played minecraft with would grow bored and leave rather suddenly, and I couldn't figure out the reason why. After all, I was just eleven when this started happening, and still fully in the throes of minecraft hype. How could anyone grow bored of this game?
As I grew older, more games took my focus-Dawn of War, Star Trek Online, the similar-in-purpose Garry's mod, and so many others all began to siphon off time spent playing minecraft into time spent playing, well, anything else. I played computer games more, but that time wasn't necessarily spent on minecraft. Even so, I still played it almost every day and was, for the most part, making friends quicker than friends were getting bored and playing something else. I sought responsibilities as an important individual on some servers and began staffing them (although, as things often go, being a young kid who speaks a lot older than expected raises eyebrows, and usually in a bad way).
Then I had my spurt with depression (as we all do at some point or another), at which point I played nothing other than Mass Effect (a rather pathetic crush on the character Tali'Zorah being the subject of the turmoil) and sat in my room feeling rather sorry for myself. It was only after meeting my current girlfriend of around three years that I got out of the phase, but by then the damage was done. My habit was broken, and from the age of 15 onwards, I would touch minecraft sparsely. I am now 18, in college, with a girlfriend, as well as working two paying jobs (one part time, one freelancing), with the only time I've played minecraft in the last six months being with a group of friends on a technic pack server (which lasted all of a week before fizzling out). I rarely have time for longer, intricate play sessions like I used to, and what time I do have is spent on faster, more exciting pursuits (such as the not so child friendly DOOM 2016, and old classics like Unreal Tournament whose pacing still makes them serviceable today).
Minecraft, one would think, is firmly out of my life. One would be wrong.
My playing of minecraft and idolising it at a younger age inspired my four cousins to all play it, and now three of them are avid players, all my age when I started, except they have, perhaps, double the content to keep them interested than I did at their age. Minecraft is a game which goes from person to person-as one poster said, like lego, you have your fun with it and then pass it on.
My girlfriend, being rather more tame in her gaming pursuits than high-octane gore-drenched mayhem, still plays minecraft sparingly and occasionally comes close to persuading me to play it with her, but my time with the game is done. From my point of view, minecraft is dead-but only to me. I think that is, perhaps, the folly of some who post these threads on the forums-they interpret their own lack of interest in the game to mean that the game is devoid of interest to anyone. It was a good run, but although it may be over for me, minecraft will live on in the generations, and past that, I don't doubt it'll become a cult classic of sorts, played in the future by collectors and nostalgic individuals (the likes of whom crack open a copy of unreal tournament for a blast today). Minecraft will never die, because so long as it is played by someone, somewhere, its legacy will go on.
TL;DR: minecraft isn't dying.
Well said. Believe me, I'm still in that boat, I play this game far too much. Then again, trying to make a business out of a server can do that to ya.
Minecraft is not dying. Everyone says this when their bored or a new update comes out. And just because some Youtuber says gaming is dying, doesn't mean the world should quit, so, no, Minecraft is not dying.
Minecraft is not dying. Everyone says this when their bored or a new update comes out. And just because some Youtuber says gaming is dying, doesn't mean the world should quit, so, no, Minecraft is not dying.
You know, I actually had no idea a new update was coming out. I've lost interest in them, mainly because my server runs 1.8.8.
You are absolutely correct in my opinion Crimson. The game and the players are growing up and the old members have found new interests in life and I am one of them who found the new interests as well. Here are some thoughts I have in mind with the game as well. I don't think of a game at all as dying, but, just that the player/fan base will decrease for a bit, or for good. But, it could also rise again. Minecraft has been decreasing from it's original player/fan base for the past two years and has been bringing the very younger generation into the game. Along with the updates with 1.8 and above, they have made very major changes to the game. It doesn't feel like what it should be or what it used to be to me. We do have our own thoughts though, but, these are just some thoughts I have. It did partially devastate me though to see the changes from the game and the see the popularity of the main players/fans decrease. I do miss being a part with the community that I've known for the past five years. Who knows, the game could bring back the original fan base sometimes. For example, Pokemon. It was very popular from the beginning, but, it has decreased it's popularity for awhile. But, it eventually brought back the old fans/players and new ones too. Maybe the same will happen for Minecraft. Currently, Minecraft is slowing down and bringing in the younger generation. But, maybe it will bring back the original/main/older members as well for a certain amount of time. Hopefully, a long time.
Yeah Minecraft is a very cool game because it can adjust to what interesting and fun with the creation of mods Minecraft is always a new and interesting I believe that Vanilla Minecraft died long time ago but with all the mods around this game will keep growing becoming more and more amusing because there maps and servers and so many different stuff that when you get bored of one you can jump to another and when you look back to the old thing you see all this new and amazing content.

Sort of... I have moved to other games, but I still frequently play it. I think my love for the idea of minecraft will never die. What I think is that old players that have been playing for YEARS (like me) are exiting the community. At least that is what is happening to me. However, a EXPLOSION of new players are coming, and we will have a bunch of new players to greet. Minecraft is changing, not dying.
I honestly don't think Minecraft will ever die within the next decade. Of course, new players come in while some of them leave. I have seen how the fan base change in popularity over the years, being a player since Beta 1.3.
I have mainly moved on to newer games, but I keep coming back to Minecraft because it is the only Sandbox game where I am allowed to create anything in creative mode without restrictions whatsoever. Period. The only reason I play Minecraft is because I can put my mind into anything I want to create within the game. I have since also seen it in newer generations of children. Being a Senior right now at a K-12 school that is project-based, I have seen many kids use Minecraft in many of their projects and the teachers love it.
So no, I don't think Minecraft will ever die, not for a while at least.

I'd say has far has most I'm kind of a young Minecraft player (playing since 2013) but I have lost some interest. I wouldn't say Minecraft is dying but I'd say it's changing... a lot. I still love the game and play it frequently and my original love for it hasn't died but why I love it has changed and I'm trying to find my drive to play it back a bit too. I honestly think it's just that because updates and changing communities and stuff that Minecraft is very different and also what I've done on the game has changed quite a bit but Minecraft is far from dead, kinda just morphing.
A minecraft forum probably isn't the most accurate place to poll for this question. Even if minecraft was a game nobody played, you probably wouldn't get results that said so. But it's an interesting discussion! Minecraft is a unique game in its replayability and its continual change. As long as it keeps getting updated, I think it could last a very long time, as it already has.
Whether video games are dying is a whole other question.
Minecraft as a whole and as a game is not dying. It is the truth minecraft is not dying because check out these articles right here. Microsoft bought minecraft for 2.5 billion dollars to make sure that it is around for the next 100 years, also another thing is in an interview with Highsnobiety and the lead designer Jeb, they talk about how minecraft has become a cultural phenomenon and is still growing and it is also a game that shows no signs of slowing down, and one more article about minecraft is that minecraft has sold more than 120 million copies worldwide with 55 million people playing minecraft every month! So the real truth is minecraft is not as a game and as a whole and it's still growing in popularity.
It isn't dying, and it isn't booming either. The game is neutral at this point. Sure, people are going to say "OMG the game is dying!" when they get bored or a new update comes out. But that has been going on for years now. Also, Mojang could release a 2.0 update if they wanted which could make the game popular again if it contains really great and unique features.
to be honest minecraft has lost a lot of it's charm. A lot of servers now-a-days are hubs with no community. It's not dieing far from it but think the servers aren't what they used to be. I feel like there was a server for all types of people, but now the amount of different types of servers has declined. everyone who makes a server just trying to make the next big hub.

Okay again minecraft as a whole is not dying it is still growing in popularity because it is still selling so much copies across all platforms and the number of people who play minecraft every month as increase as as well. Did you not read all these links these are all facts about minecraft I will give you these links again so that you can look at it again and understand it this time and again Microsoft bought minecraft for 2.5 billion dollars to make sure that it will last for the next 100 years and whenever minecraft is released on a new platform it will boost minecraft popularity check out these articles again and it is true everything I did say about minecraft is true because of these articles and all these articles are real facts about minecraft and if you don't believe me with all these articles and make up your own opinions that's fine but you can't deny the real facts of minecraft from these articles that I linked right here which in fact that they all appeared on the google news section when you type in Minecraft. So I suggest that you look at all of these links right here and understand these real facts about minecraft because again the truth is minecraft as a whole is not dying and it is still growing in popularity and the player base is rising period.
I'm pretty sure that minecraft is not dying. It may not be at its most popular times with all the update arguments and the community, but minecraft is still a popular game that people still play.
Even if it isn't dying financially, it is definitely decreasing community-wise. For one, there seem to be far less community servers, just mega-hubs filled with immature/rude players, and mini games that they copy from each other. Mojang is father away from the community now that they sold themselves to Microsoft, and the development of the game is much less eventful now.
There are still fun communities to be found, but the game's prime already happened.
The game's "prime" is still happening, maybe even still to come, as seen by the numerous links Bryan_Storm posted above:
Microsoft’s previous milestone was 100 million copies, which Minecraft reached in early June 2016. That means that a whopping 22 million people bought a copy of the game in the last nine months. Asked by Polygon, a Microsoft representative clarified that although the company has been allowing owners of the original Java-based PC/Mac version of Minecraft to get a free copy of Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition, Microsoft does not include those redemptions in its sales calculation.
“The 122M units is paid units to players only,” the spokesperson told Polygon.
Mojang also announced today that Minecraft currently has 55 million monthly active players, an increase of 37.5 percent from the 40 million that Microsoft reported back in June. It’s possible that the recent release of version 1.0 of Minecraft’s Windows 10 Edition and Pocket Edition — the former is essentially a port of the latter — helped raise the number of monthly active users. Mojang released the Ender Update for those versions in mid-December, officially bringing them out of beta.
Just because some servers or the perceived "community" are declining doesn't mean that the game is, which is what 99%% of "Minecraft is dying!" posts are about (often with suggestions that the game is dying overall). Or the PC Edition; see the last part of what I quoted above; not that the PC edition is dying either though.
In fact, Microsoft has some very lofty visions of the future for Minecraft:
(of course, since I've never played multiplayer any possible decline in the multiplayer community is lost on me, and anyway, more people play singleplayer than multiplayer, more recently possibly more than suggested by this 2 year old chart if the decline in the multiplayer community is really that bad)

I'd say a lot of long term users will feel as if the game is dropping off a bit. TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
When people get older, some stop playing minecraft. thing is, people always buy new minecraft. it just means domination of the noobs
