While playing Minecraft, the launcher I had open closed itself and brought up a new dialogue box that states that it is downloading a 40MB update. Why did the launcher do this, and why is the "update" so large?
EDIT: OK guys. I found out why it is so large. The new launcher is predownloaded to your computer, but does not load until a predefined date. Uploaded screenshots as proof: http://imgur.com/a/nr1Ju
Currently we do not know what the predefined date is for when the new launcher activates itself, but it seems to be within today and next Friday. It also seems to be random for each user, as some people have had the new launcher shoved down their throats as soon as this update was downloaded and installed.
I noticed the same thing, and was curious as to what it downloaded; as it turns out, most of that is the launcher itself:
Considering that the launcher is basically just an interface used to launch the game there is little reason for it to be so big (there is no code in the launcher that the game depends on; you can even copy the launch command and paste it into a batch file and start the game that way, which is one way people got around the launcher only letting you launch one instance at a time. MCP also launches the game in a similar manner).
I considered the possibility that they included the Java runtime in the launcher itself although the folder for it is 130 MB (it hasn't been updated since I installed Minecraft on my computer in August; the launcher itself says it is using Java 8 update 25, the same as always, while the latest version is update 121).

I used 7Zip to open the EXE file right up, and found all of the assets for the new launcher stored within. I have taken screenshots and uploaded them to Imgur: http://imgur.com/a/nr1Ju
Also, a miniature version of the chrome browser is actually built into the launcher itself. It is most likely the file "libcef.dll".

Check out my website Here!Website is down until further notice.40mb isn't large, it's very small in fact. You may be mistaking it for 40 gigabytes, gb.
- C.C.
It is large for me, since the best WiFi I can get is only 80KB/s down and 20KB/s up.

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
