I've run into this problem several times now. I can find plenty of mods for 1.7.10 and 1.8.9, but there's none for 1.8. I remember people saying that 1.7.10 mods should work just fine for 1.8, but every one I've tried hasn't. Minecraft hasn't crashed, thankfully. But the mods just don't show up in the mod list and if I try 1.8.9, Forge stops Minecraft from launching because the mod wants 1.8.9 instead of 1.8.
Specifically, I'm looking for some sort of backpack mod. Although I'd be happy with any portable storage mods (as long as they can be transported across oceans.) And remember - I need them for just plain ol' 1.8.
I may be wrong, so feel free to correct me, but the reason why a lot of mod versions were skipped are because there were a lot of changes going from 1.7.10 to anything higher. As you probably know, a lot of mods are still stuck on 1.7.10, but plenty just skipped ahead, even to 1.10. Since the mods took so long to come out, they didn't bother with trying to make the mods work for everything below 1.10 since 1.10 was the current version at that time.
It would be a huge waste of time trying to make the mods work for every single version, so they just focused on the current minecraft version. And since the mods were taking a long time to update, the "current version" kept going up, meaning 1.8 was skipped, 1.9 was skipped, and then the mods finally updated for 1.10.

All nine of the sub-versions of PCMCv1.8 (1.8.1 - 1.8.9) were all minor "tweaks".
I can not think of a reason why you wouldn't be able to just open your 1.8 world in 1.8.9 with no problems.
My advice: Create a profile for PCMCv1.8.9 and designate a separate game directory (folder) and run it to get the launcher to create the needed sub--folders then COPY your 1.8 world save folder to the Saves folder in that game folder.
Then install the 1.8.9 mods for that profile and play your world.
Try it. It certainly can't hurt.

Oh yeah.. I guess I didn'tmention that, huh? Woops!
I would gladly just play on 1.8.9, guys. Or even 1.10, but the reason I can't is because I'm playing on a Technic modpack for 1.8.
So the next thing you would probably say is either just install the mods yourself or look for a different modpack, but it has 10 Lucky Blocks addons. I know they're probably easy to find and download all the prerequisite mods for if you look in the right place, but I've had trouble finding Lucky Blocks addons and I'm lazy. cx A modpack just straight up givingall these lucky blocks to me is awesome!
Most mods skipped 1.7.10 in favor of 1.9 and 1.10 because of the new .json system. Most of the modmakers who didn't update were just too lazy to create 50+ text files. They have now found the switch to be worth it, given the two year gap in updates between 1.7.10 and 1.9/1.10.

1.8 is quite difficult to code in. They usually just make mods for 1.7.10 or 1.9.
