There's a new cramming gamerule for 1.11 prerelease.
And playing it, I go to my XP farm to AFK for xp and such, and it gets to about 24 before every time a new one drop, one dies.
And that sorta completly ruins AFKing, so I was wondering if you think it would be cheating to turn that off so I could go back to the old days where I could AFK and come back to 1000 or so rather then 50.
It's your single player game, play it how you want. They specifically made it a gamerule so you can turn it off because they know some people like to play like that.

Pretty sure the point of the gamerule is to remove lag, so you don't "forget" and end up with TONS of mobs in your grinder. It's definitally not cheating in my opinion to change it, it's intended to change it. You decide if it's cheating for you, though.
I personally won't be changing it. I don't like to fiddle with default behavior, especially don't like turning on LAN mode to do so. Besides if you want xp, not a lot of difference between 24 and 100+ mobs, just means harvesting more frequently. I definitely don't AFK for longer than a few minutes at traps where mobs are accumulating because if you crash your game it can corrupt your world and be very hard to fix all the way around. I'm pretty invested in most of my worlds.
Quote from the old Minecraft trailer (from 2011): "No one can tell you what you can or can not do."
Before setting up a Survival world, I always set keepInventory to true and mobGriefing to false. There's no harm in setting the gamerule since you're changing how you play the game essentially.
I'm planning on turning it off at least for a while until I figure out how to fix my various farms. (The zombie and skeleton XP farms I'm not so concerned about anymore now that I have an Enderman farm, but the Blaze farm is another matter...)
