I'm so beyond frustrated. I play Minecraft with the mindset of building something that I can be proud of.
I start a new world. I play for awhile. I get frustrated and quit. The next day, I delete the world and start a new one. The cycle starts all over again.
I have literally been doing this for YEARS. Literally HUNDREDS of deleted worlds. I'm in a hellish cycle that I can't break free from.
Occasionally I'll decide that the only way I can beat this is to just play vanilla; get rid of all the mods. So I start playing vanilla Minecraft and within 10 minutes I'm like "Wow this sucks!!!" It's like trying to paint a landscape with a broken brush and 3 colors.
I am decent at making segments. In superflat mode. I can make a creative wall. Or pond. Or segregated garden. And they look good. But building in survival mode is like painting a mural, and I can't figure out how to put the pieces together to make one nice-looking picture.
YES. I'm not the only one who feels like this. Provided I've kept my Survival world, but still. My big issue with building in Survival is not being able to acquire certain blocks with ease, let alone get them in numbers. The prismarine and purpur built on this well, as they are renewable.
i used to do this a lot, until recently i made a world when the 1.9 update came out. finally i made just about the most progress i have made on a survival world-- defeated the enderdragon! haven't fought the wither yet, but recently i went to the end and got an elytra and some cool loot(in 1.11 snapshots). in addition, i built a bunch of stuff just because i progressed so far in the game. so how do i do it?
well, honestly, don't really know how. you have to find a way to play the game you enjoy, make a goal, get creative. the problem is that minecraft used to be so very limited in the palette and abilities you have, which made people really creative(although the terrain gen helped a lot)! nowadays, however, the exact opposite is true: there are a plethora of things to do and use in minecraft, not to mention creative mode. most players nowadays don't even believe survival mode is FOR building, because they'd rather just use creative mode. creative mode is nice for inspiration, but here's what i say:
first, indulge the survival experience. build up. make a nice base, look at some screenshots of the old days or others' builds and plot out what to do, or just wing it. once you have some better stuff the process of material obtaining is less difficult, and you have less things to explore which leaves a lot of room for doing anything. after that, the question is WHAT to do-- and i can't help you there. sometimes i have good days and sometimes i have bad ones in the creativity department. i dunno, explore, find some cool terrain. if you want a cow farm, build the mother of all cows. make a tower that stretches from a bedrock pit up to the world height limit. do something interesting that makes absolutely no sense but looks cool.
sorry if this seemed like an uninteresting rant without a point, but i tried. also, here's some stuff i've built:
I see what you mean, but it's kinda the opposite for me. Minecraft has gone in a completely different direction than I would have liked it to. I've never even been to the End. I've no desire to beat the Ender dragon, or the Wither, or to kill 15 pigs to trade with a villager, or fly around with those electra wings or whatever, etc.
I just want the missing slabs & stairs, along with more flowers, lanterns, lattices or trellises, etc. I look at a lot of garden design photos online and get inspired, only to get frustrated because I can't figure out how to translate my inspiration into the MC world.
Personally, I love starting over. It's little ole defenseless me against a huge untamed world that's out to get me! I'm with ZennyKenny- I could care less about the End, or the Nether for that matter. I start a new world (and I've started many dozens) with the mindset of building a better house, a better mob trap, a better farm, etc. Once I've finished with my building, I've thought of a dozen different ways I could've done things better- so time to start a new world. I've also never made the mistake of falling "in love" with a world. I can delete one in a heartbeat no matter how much time and effort I've put into it.

I may be wrong, but the way I read this, you start off with good intentions, but the execution leaves something to be desired.
Remember the Six P's: Prior Planning Prevents Pi$$ Poor Performance.
You know, you have a good point. A big part of the reason why I get so frustrated is that I get about half way done with my home build, look at it and go "ew". And I don't want to take the time to break everything down and start over.

Figured it was time for a change.

Heh, I like that cow.
