It won't die for a while. It will just slowly lose players. It has been around for a long time, and some of those from the start are long gone, but they had fun. After a while it gets a little old.
I'm a little old, but Minecraft is not old for me. I'm 65 years old and one of the original Beta testers. I believe Minecraft will be around for a while yet.
Over the past year there has been some... Changes. A few years back minecraft development began to focus on not just one project... PE(Pocket Edition). From a post Mojang had posted a few months back (or was it last month???) they showed a graph of the games bought. PE had absolutely SMASHED the PC editions...
So what does this mean??? What will this mean for future game development? In conclusion the developers are more than likely going to be ultimately moving to focus on PE as their main edition, or another idea is that because PE development is faster then PC, E will catch up to the computer version thus make one major game that is exactly the same on all platforms! Also, in one of Adam's (aka SWIMMINGBIRD) YouTube videos, he suggest that this may be the case. Who knows. But the graphs show that more people play PE than other platforms.
No, it is not dying. It may have reached the peak of its popularity and has gone down a bit since, but that does not mean it is dying. Just like the number of searches will go down for a new COD game after maybe a month after its release, it doesn't mean that new COD game has died or is dying.

Most people buy PE edition is because most people have phones than computers. And you can bring PE anywhere you go. They are not gonna switch their main focus on PE. They are just speeding those up because of tweets saying : "WHEN WILL 0.X.X RELEASE! I AM HYPED!" repeatedly.

I have returned after all these years and I'm internally dying inside whenever I think about the posts I've done prior to this current year. Just don't look at them.
Not sure if it's dying more or less changing and it has been changing for a long time. I have played it for 6 years and I remember back when I first started out the first server I joined I played it for 4+ years and it was just regular ol' server where I met so many great people where even though the server is down today I still speak with so many of them. Minecraft is in the age of minigames and all that stuff. Regular ol' survival is sadly dead.
people always say "minecraft is dyeing". So many years i hear this
But many servers are dying right now because they dont update anymore. they think they shouldt because of the pvp changes. this servers will sooner or later die.

I don't see how not updating will cause PvP servers to die - when you are doing PvP things like woodland mansions and new blocks are not so important. They could even implement some new features (or remove the 1.9 features) with plugins, mods, or even command blocks, sort of like how I keep updating a mod for 1.6.4, which has some features from later versions in addition to my own (many of them a bit different from vanilla, such as my own "cooldown" system which preserves the ability to attack groups of mobs; of course, 1.11 added a new enchantment that makes sweep attacks nearly as powerful as a unenchanted diamond sword, and even more so since you only need to attack once to damage all players or mobs and not deal direct hits). I've even seen YouTubers playing on a server which is still on 1.7.10 (if due to mods, but as I mentioned above mods can obsolete new updates by providing more or less the same features - in many cases before they were added to vanilla).
Don't think it's dying or that it will ever die. Popularity will come and go and diminish over the long run, but players will remain as long as they live.
Have been playing for several years all on the same server. Some of the changes made to the game are great, some so-so, and some really suck. Still, I play for a while and then switch off on a different game for a while then come back. The only three games I keep going on this sort of off-and-on basis are 'Minecraft', 'Skyrim', and 'Don't Starve'. These never seem to get old to me.

It's not "the new thing" anymore, and so its popularity has declined, but I wouldn't say it is dying. I set it aside for awhile sometimes when new games come along, but I always go back to it, but I don't seem to be going back to the new games. At some point updates will stop coming and servers will get harder to find and then you can probably be justified in saying it's "dying".
Hardcore fans will probably keep it alive for a long time, and the modding community is still churning out new content as well. In fact when updates cease, that encourages modders more because they know their mods won't suddenly stop working with a new release.
With the endless possibilities of command blocks and the creation of adventure maps, Minecraft will stay alive. However, many people are still not tapping into the potential of command blocks. Maps like Herobrine's Mansion and Team Swoop Force are built by a group of people, so it needs hardwork.
I tend to consider minecraft less a game then a hobby. It's like knitting or sewing where you take something and turn it into something else. That is where the satisfaction comes from. Of course everyone wants to taste the novelty when everyone starts talking about it but once they decide it's not for them they go away. That's what we have here. It's not dying but has overcome its fad stage.
Dont cry though. The minecraft movie is on the way. PREPARE FOR THE NOOB SWARMS!
Oh lord, why must people use google trends as a gauge for popularity.
Google trends has literally no correlation to the popularity of Minecraft and whether it's "dying" or not. It's probably the worst metric to use when judging whether the game is losing popularity.
I guess according to google trends, global warming is "dying" also, and has been since 2007.
Google trends has no correlation other than people getting worried and noticing it's descent. So you're right there. But first off, minecraft is dying.
But the game isn't "OMG #DYING", it's taking the same fall as every other game, eventually a game population will hit a drop, we're on that, and with every update the game may get a small boost, but it's no longer constantly accumulating players.
Like I said, dumbest metric ever for many things. AMAZING metric for targeted advertising so you can focus on things people are specifically searching for, TERRIBLE metric for popularity as it has no emotional weighting and is strictly search terms.

ROFL, wut? Are you implying that children are getting hearing disabilities from playing Minecraft? I don't even...
He's exaggerating, and trolling. The point is to catch people who don't know much or are new to internet and to receive reactions (coughs).
What if I want to play it on my new Nintendo Switch
Minecraft for the nintendo switch will be the same shoddy console version, and it won't be a massive money gain, only people who are drawn in by basic marketing (unless they do not already own the game) will buy it, and even then - nintendo is a weakening company. They won't earn as much money from this as they have from xbox/playstation.
What if I want to play it on the Hololens? Then I not only have to re-purchase the game, but I also have to buy a Hololens from Microsoft.
Minecraft is owned by a larger majority of >12 people. There are large communities of 20+ yr olds, but no one will solely buy a hololens to play minecraft, and there's no way a bunch of kids are gonna buy a hololens (also it's connected to the xbox version meaning it'll be owned already).
LOLOLOLOL... What. Is. This? Who's the chaos king? I'm so interested, you have no idea.
"lolololol... What. Is. this?" Okay, grow up before trying to criticize someone. Especially when you have no idea that you're being baited.
I didn't see any of that in your "awesome vids", all I saw was what appeared to be a completely terrible server and you right clicking on a chest. Pretty much the exact opposite of awesome, which is probably why you only managed 59 views. Maybe you should bring in that chaos king guy somehow, I bet he can get you some more views!
And I doubt you have anything better, your post itself is worse than his videos. Not to mention 59 views is a pretty well made benchmark for anyone who's new to youtube. Either way he put more effort into it than you put into your criticism, he made a video, and your response was "completely terrible server" and "exact opposite of awesome". None of those even relate to how the video is made other than general criticism, they're just throwaway insults used to harm someone rather than to describe the video.
Have a nice day, and i'll be glad to respond again if you wish.

Hello! I am jacklego5, i have played since the alpha days and i am a Veteran at minecraft ( I'm pretty good )
If i am helpful, why not give me a thanks? THANKS! <--- Get it?
Minecraft is still expanding yet at a slower pace. But the old minecraft is dead for a lot of people today. After 1.7 the game has consistently received features that take away from its original creativity and moves towards adventure and customization. The player base has been split up to 1.8, 1.9, 1.10 and 1.11 because a significant amount of players have been unhappy with one update or another.
Actually, all MC's have sold over 107.86 million, the PC version accounts for about 25 million of that (the rest is all other editions). Beings how it's been out for 6 years now, it should've sold a lot of copies. Also keep in mind that sales figures do not represent the number of players. Many of us have bought several editions (including 5 myself).
Google trends has no correlation other than people getting worried and noticing it's descent.
Who are these people getting worried? If it has no correlation then who cares if it's descending?
But first off, minecraft is dying.
How do you figure? What statistical data besides google trends(which again, has no correlation to the popularity of a game) are you basing this off?
But the game isn't "OMG #DYING", it's taking the same fall as every other game, eventually a game population will hit a drop, we're on that, and with every update the game may get a small boost, but it's no longer constantly accumulating players.
How is Minecraft not constantly accumulating players? When I checked https://minecraft.net/en-us/stats/ yesterday, it was at over 10,000 copies sold in the last 24 hours, higher than the average 5000-7000 copies sold I generally see(it's currently at 7,386).
Sales aren't even slowing down when there was actually a 25%-100% increase from the daily average(which hasn't declined for years and years) just yesterday on PC sales alone, the smallest market share of any version.
Minecraft for the nintendo switch will be the same shoddy console version, and it won't be a massive money gain, only people who are drawn in by basic marketing (unless they do not already own the game) will buy it, and even then - nintendo is a weakening company. They won't earn as much money from this as they have from xbox/playstation
By definition the Switch version will not be the same as any other console version. Can I play my Xbox version while walking down the street? You know, like the entire selling point of the Switch? Have you even seen the Switch? Do you know why it's called the Switch?
Who cares if they make as much off the Switch sales as xbox/PS versions? Sales are sales are sales. If the game continues to sell, that would suggest it's not dying, correct? Adding another platform for sales can only increase overall sales, correct?
The Switch version will basically be the first version of Minecraft to make a step towards Microsoft's end game for development. A Minecraft you can play anywhere, anytime. They want you to be able to play the same Minecraft world on any version, on any device, at any time, most likely through realms so you'll have to go through Microsoft directly at $7.99/mo for cross compatibility.
The "shoddy" console version represents more of a market share than the PC version, which hit 25 million sales less than a month ago and has sold ~220,000 copies since.
You can clearly see in the graphic below that PC sales can represent as little as 15% of the market share by region.
Minecraft is owned by a larger majority of >12 people.
I don't understand what this means.
There are large communities of 20+ yr olds, but no one will solely buy a hololens to play minecraft, and there's no way a bunch of kids are gonna buy a hololens (also it's connected to the xbox version meaning it'll be owned already).
Who said people need to buy a hololens solely for Minecraft? If it helps push hololens sales though Microsoft won't complain, which it will.
Which Xbox version were you talking about btw? 360 or xbox1? What about next gen consoles like the PS5 and Xbox "Two" that will eventually be released?
The original xbox and PS versions were limited to 862x862 worlds the old PE worlds were a mere 256x256(many of them do not even have access to the end with no portal spawns due to the small world size). The current xbox1 and PS4 versions have a limit of 5120x5120. Do you imagine they sold many copies on xbox1/PS4 as a result of the world more than tripling in size? How many PS5/Xbox "Two" copies do you think they'll sell when they increase the world size to 15000x15000? Still a far cry from the 30 million x 30 million blocks on the PC version, but it's coming along.
As long as the game is being developed, it won't ever come close to dying. Once they stop development, that's when the game will start dying.

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
