Many of the Minecraft quizzes and such out there are trivia questions about the game's finer details as well as its history. "When was the game created?" "What biome does this block generate in?" "Which of these can you not use as fuel?" etc. This quiz, however, is a set of "puzzles" or "riddles," if you will, where you try to find out how a certain event could have possibly happened. They might be tougher than you think, so put on your thinking diamond helmet!
1. The Mystery Mob
I am thinking of a hostile mob. You can find and kill it in Survival and it gives you experience upon death. It does not spawn in the Overworld. It does not spawn in the Nether. It does not spawn in the End. What is this mob?
Hint:
Not all mobs are spawned naturally. Some involve action on the player's part.
2. Into the Void
Jack and Jill went down the hill, mining down to the bottom layers of the world. Jack, who isn't all that experienced with Minecraft, asks if there's a way to get down lower. Jill responds, "No, you can't. There's bedrock underneath, and you can't break it no matter what you use." Jack says "OK, let me try it out." He breaks a block underneath him and instantly falls into the void. Both players are in survival, and neither commands nor command blocks have ever been allowed in the server. Moreover, Jack and Jill were the first players to visit this hill and the blocks underneath it. So if no commands are available and no previous players had tampered with it, how did Jack break into the void?
Hint:
No human alterations have taken place here. What other types of alterations may have taken place during world generation?
3. Escape
Zach made his way into a cave one day, but had to log out of the server and do something real quick. When he returned, Zach found himself in an 10 x 10 x 10 hollow cube made of bedrock. Zach began to panic. Was a mod or something trying to troll him? Inside the cube is 218 stone, 3 blocks of water, 2 redstone ores, 5 iron ores, and 19 blocks of lava. All Zach brought with him was 3 logs, 11 cooked chicken, and 9 torches. Immediately Zach thought "I know how to get out of here," and quickly got to work. Since he wasn't in creative or spectator, cheats were not allowed for him, and no one else was online to rescue him, how did he escape? Suicide does not count.
Hint:
When water combines with lava, it creates something very important in this scenario.
4. Killing the invincible mob?
Mike and Ike are playing on a server with command blocks disabled. Mike is an operator with creative mode, and Ike is a non-op in survival. Mike summons a mob that has Resistance V and Regeneration V, both of which last forever. He then sends the mob at Ike. Ike manages to kill the mob. Since Ike is in survival mode without cheats, and neither Mike nor any other players helped him, how did the "invincible" mob die? Despawning does not count.
Hint:
Not every mob works in this scenario. Only a specific one can be killed under these conditions.
5. Escape, Part II
Joe was running around his Minecraft server when he had to quickly log off and do something. When he logged back on he found some trolling mod had built a hollow 10 x 10 x 10 bedrock cube around him and set the difficulty to peaceful. Joe immediately noticed a hole in the wall, where he saw a few pigs standing completely still outside--but they were too far away to reach. They didn't seem to want to move...perhaps they needed motivation. Inside the cube was 108 blocks of dirt, 51 blocks of grass, 2 dandelions, 3 poppies, and 13 blocks of water. All Joe had in his inventory was 2 logs, 1 spider eye, 2 string, 3 lily pads, a bucket, some melon seeds, and some beetroot seeds. Joe immediately knew how to escape. What did he do? (Suicide still doesn't count.)
Hint:
The string is used to make a very important tool.
6. The Mystery Block
I am thinking of a block. This block is opaque and generates naturally in the Overworld. You cannot break it in Survival. You cannot break it in Creative. What is this block?
Hint:
Solids are breakable in Creative, no matter what block. What other forms of matter are there?
7. The Armor Stands
Five armor stands are lined up in front of you, from left to right. Each armor stand is wearing 4 pieces of armor--a helmet, chestplate, leggings, and boots--each made of any of 5 different materials--leather, chain, iron, gold, and diamond. Use the clues below to determine which armor stand is wearing what pieces of armor.
1. No two armor stands share the exact same piece of armor. No armor stand has two pieces of armor made of the same material.
2. The 5 armor stands, from left to right, are: the one that doesn't have any iron armor, the one with chain leggings, the one with a leather helmet, the one with a diamond chestplate, and the one that doesn't have any gold armor.
3. The 5 armor stands, in no particular order, are: the one directly to the left of the armor stand with diamond boots, the one with a gold helmet, the one with a leather chestplate, the one with diamond leggings, and the one with a chain chestplate.
4. The armor stand with the gold helmet is directly to the left of the one with a golden chestplate and directly to the right of the one with gold leggings.
5. The armor stand with an iron chestplate is somewhere to the left of the one with diamond leggings.
Hint:
Drawing a simple chart or picture in front of you should help a lot.
8. Escape, Part III
Tracy was running to and from her house to grab supplies for a redstone project, but at one point she had to log off real quick and go AFK for a minute. When she joined back on, she discovered she was in a 15 x 15 x 15 hollow cube of bedrock.
This was definitely the work of that stupid mod that Zach and Joe told me all about," she thought.
Inside the cube was nothing but a couple layers of dirt and grass. Tracy had brought with her 15 logs, a bucket of water, a stack of iron ingots, two stacks of redstone dust, a stack of cobblestone, 3 slime blocks, a stack of TNT, 17 torches, a diamond sword, and 23 steak. Tracy thought for a while, then suddenly she remembered something. She immediately got to work. Suicide, of course, is still not the answer, so how did she escape?
Hint:
I'll admit, this one isn't very fair. This involves a glitch that allows you to break bedrock in 1.8, 1.9, and 1.10. Look around on YouTube and you'll find it pretty quickly.
If you found an answer to any of these, put your answer in a spoiler and I'll tell you if it's correct! Extra bragging rights if you solved it without the hint.
Stumped by this one. I think it's possible to break bedrock doing something with trees, but if Jack is inexperienced he wouldn't know that. It also didn't technically say what block he broke underneath him to fall to the void, but I think I'm reaching at this point lol.
...Whomp. Got me, no clue at all. XD
I'm going to go with a rabbit since it has the least health out of all mobs
Do the pigs have saddles on them? If so, Joe could use a fishing rod to bring them closer to him so he could get out of the box by riding one. Otherwise...no clue :P.
I'll come back to these another day, but nice puzzles, pretty challenging.
I'm going to go with a rabbit since it has the least health out of all mobs
Sorry, incorrect. Resistance V makes all mobs invincible, no matter the health. And that statement is also incorrect, as the smallest slimes and magma cubes as well as chickens have lower health.
Do the pigs have saddles on them? If so, Joe could use a fishing rod to bring them closer to him so he could get out of the box by riding one. Otherwise...no clue :P.
No, they do not. However, you're on the right track with both of your ideas
Mine 8 stone and 3 iron. To be fair, you need a stone pickaxe for this.
Craft a furnace
Smelt 3 iron using 2 planks as fuel.
Craft a bucket.
Cast a portal next to the lava.
Place remaining plank next to portal so lava sets fire to the plank and lights the portal.
Rescue plank.
Enter portal.
Explore Nether until finding a portal back to the Overworld outside the box.
Or if ******* mod has been thorough and destroyed all portals find flint in the gravel and 3 diamonds in fortress chests.
Take portal back to box.
Smelt another iron with plank as fuel.
Craft diamond pick and flint and steel.
Return to Nether and mine Portal.
Build and light new portal back to Overworld. You know, you can make this last part easier by simply finding obsidian and flint-and-steel in fortress chests. Nevertheless, your answer is
I know 4 has already been done, but here's an alternate mob:
Zombie Villager. Ike cures the zombie villager, which then reverts to a regular villager with none of the potion effects. He then murders the villager using anything.
5. Escape, Part II
1. Turn all logs into 8 planks.
2. Turn 4/8 planks into a crafting table.
3. Turn 2/4 planks into 4 sticks.
4. Turn 3/4 sticks and 2/2 string into a fishing rod.
5. Fish in the water until the RNG gods smile and bless you with a saddle.
6. Reel in a pig using the fishing rod. Be sure not to force the pig inside!
7. Saddle the pig.
8. Mount the pig through the hole, forcing you to the other side of the wall.
9. (Optional) Celebrate your victory by throwing a massive dinner party with all the fish you caught waiting for the stupid saddle.

Kudos to you for the first one, because I didn't think of that at all.
Endermite or Silverfish. Neither spawn naturally, both require player interaction to spawn and both are hostile.
Hmm. I guess they do. Granted, endermites will spawn naturally as endermen teleport around the world and silverfish come from spawners, so those don't really count...?
I do not believe this is possible in any recent version without using mods or Superflat since the deepest mineshafts and strongholds appear to be able to generate is y=2 (floor at y=1) and dungeons, which the Wiki claims [citation needed - likely because there are no actual examples] can rarely generate deep enough to cut through the lowest layer of bedrock, will never generate any deeper than the deepest air pocket; even if you used mods to remove lava from caves they do not go below y=2 either. I just used Minutor to check the lowest layer of my world (>64,000 chunks) and did not see any signs of holes (non-bedrock blocks; a dungeon would be very noticeable) in the lowest bedrock layer; in this world I've found plenty of mineshafts as deep as y=2 (I've explored several hundred, which should be enough to almost conclusively verify that they can not cut through bedrock).
However, prior to release 1.2 water and lava lakes could generate below y=5 and carve a hole in the lowest layer of bedrock (from looking at the code for 1.6.4 they cannot generate lower than this even though their random height is 0-127 (0-255 since 1.7). This is the level of their liquid surface, with a maximum depth of 4 blocks, or down to y=1):
With the addition of lakes (of lava and water) at any height, it was possible for a lake to cause an unusually large gap in the bedrock. This was fixed in release 1.2
public class WorldGenLakes extends WorldGenerator
{
public boolean generate(World par1World, Random par2Random, int par3, int par4, int par5)
{
if (par4 <= 4)
{
return false;
I have not found where in the code it says that mineshafts or strongholds cannot generate below a certain layer but I would assume that y=2 is the limit given that I've found mineshafts with their center rooms as deep as y=4 (at -380, -810 in the seed -123775873255737467 in 1.6.4; Chunkbase shows that a mineshaft exists there in 1.7+ as well and it should still be the same since all they did was make them 40% as common) - even one stairway, which always go down, from this level would breach the lowest bedrock layers but there is nothing going lower than y=2.
I assume that any of the methods to break bedrock using glitches are not relevant here because you said they mined the block under them - unless it was a dark oak log in 1.7-1.8.1, and you previously said it was not a Superflat world

I'll admit, #2 was the one I was most skeptical about posting, since I figured it could very well be a bug that was fixed a long time ago. I might want to remove this one, but...I don't really know. It's not like anyone else is really going to care, right? It's already been solved and proven false, so the question is no longer relevant.
Since these puzzles are being solved as fast as MineCon tickets are selling out, I'm going to need to stay on top of adding new content. Which I am. Or...I'm doing my best, anyway.

I added a new question and tweaked a few things. Just thought I'd tell ya.
Oh great, now I have to get a new computer.
Wow, 58 views and no one has solved any of the puzzles yet!
Let's see if I can give some people the satisfaction of solving a puzzle by posting an easier one.
Oh great, now I have to get a new computer.
Well, here's my answers for questions one and two:
1. The Mystery Mob
The only thing I think of is the Wither.
2. Into the Void
Pretty sure both Jack and Jill were in a very low dungeon or stronghold. (I've had this happen to me once a few years back.)
These are my answers to the questions;
I'll come back to these another day, but nice puzzles, pretty challenging.
Both correct.
Correct.
