I haven't played Minecraft in a bit due to lack of interest but I'm slowly getting back into it. While in creative, I tested out elytras with a friend and I found them to be a really cool feature and quickly came up with ideas surrounding them. However, I do have a few questions about them that I haven't been able to find any answers to and would appreciate clarification.
1. Is there a quicker way to switch out elytras and chestplates without going into my inventory?
I want to use elytras in combat since attacking my enemies from the air can give me a pretty nice advantage once I get used to aiming from that height but once I land on the ground, the elytras become rather useless as they don't act as armor and trying to climb up to a suitable height to use them again can be rather time consuming and might result in my own defeat under certain battle circumstances. With that in mind, is there a quick way to switch between my chestplate and my elytra or is swapping them out in my inventory menu the only way to do it?
2. Can they be customized?
Simply put, the flat gray color just doesn't do it for me. I am part of a server that allows clans and I have an idea for a clan that could have a cool use for elytras as they would fit with the theme of the clan and be great for combat. I want to see if there's a way to either dye them or maybe attach a banner to them to signify that they belong to members of my clan.
3. Is there a way to descend quicker but not risk fall damage?
Elytras are great for traveling as they can go quite a large distance while slowly descending. However, the area where I want to land is sometimes much closer than I had thought and I'm much too high up to land properly. The only way to land where I want is to enter a steeper descent but that comes with the risk of fall damage which could be deadly if not properly accounted for. Is there a quicker way to descend without risking fall damage (think using the sneak key to descend while flying in creative mode)?
That should be just about everything that I want to know. I would really appreciate it if someone could answer these questions as the elytras seem like an incredibly cool feature and I'd love to use them since they can be quite helpful. Thanks in advance!

Switching them manually via the inventory screen seems to be the only way.

The only way to change its texture is to have an official cape.

A pool of water where you want to land seems to be the best way of reducing risk of fall damage.
Okay. I understand. It's a shame that there's no quick switch option since that would be very useful. I doubt that there's a way to make capes and I have no idea where/how I'd get the official ones so I'll just have to deal with the dull gray elytra. The pool of water thing might be tricky depending on the area that I'm in but I guess that I'll manage. Thanks for the clarification!
(I tried quoting but the reply broke when previewed)
As for the descent, carry a bucket of water, and hold right click while looking downwards. This should place water on the block you are going to fall to and save you from fall damage.

Wait for time
In the break of new dawn
We will never meet

When you want to land somewhere, stop directly above it and turn your mouse rapidly left. You should spiral down safely.
Why am I here
