Coming from over a decade of WoW playing and starting Minecraft in March, I am quite honestly already disenchanted by my inability to stay motivated to complete projects, finish the game (dragon/the end/etc) and am in general just feeling blah about every single server I attempt to join.
How do the rest of you post-MMORPG types manage to find "fun and happiness" in MC when servers are either filled with bratty, annoying kids that you wouldn't want to spend an hour with let alone months working on an epic project... or servers have maybe 3-5 people logged on, and you don't care for any of them ... or servers are run by power hungry admin who just want to stalk you and read your private messages...
On WoW, I could post something silly in trade and manage to find at least 1 other person with the same mentality as me and thus would be born a friendship and someone that would be interesting to get to know - and then the next day I could do the same, and soon I would have a friends list growing of people on my battlenet of whom I could pick and select to hang out with...
Here... I bounce from server to server, and have yet to find one that I want to permanently call "home" - I won't say that I am not part of the problem, because like most, I have perhaps some unrealistic expectations of what kind of people I want to meet, as well as I am slightly nutty/eccentric/downright crazy cat lady - but...
How do you guys manage to not grow entirely disenfranchised after having thousands of people to choose from - to barely having anyone on servers or having to wade through annoyingly immature kids?
Minecraft takes creative people to be engaged. We have perseverance, friends, and patience to find the right servers. Along with having iron skin and just laughing at the foul youngsters, who have tainted MC's reputation. You could simply ask a few veteran players around here for servers, or go check them out in the servers section. As mentioned previously, Minecraft takes creativity, and single player takes more so.
If you want a nice experience without pulling your hair out, set up a vanilla survival world and invite a few friends on with you and cooperate. One of the best experiences MC has to offer, and what it was made for. Give it a try!
Oddly enough I left WOW behind for pretty much the same reason I have left Minecraft multiplayer behind. I dislike the social aspect of playing with others and, at least in WOW's case, being forced to work with other people to advance to end game quests. On that last point I admittedly might be a little out of date because I've been told since I quit WOW that you can go solo now more than you could when I was playing.
I know many WOW guilds do get together and play other games so have you tried asking any of your WOW friends if they also play MInecraft? Because the Minecraft multiplayer community is so toxic it might be better to find fellow players in WOW and look for a server together or even start your own small whitelisted community.

I appreciate the response, but trust me, I have spent countless hours browsing and applying to, and trying out a variety of 18+ servers in the server section without much success (for many different reasons, quite likely including my own stubborn ways)
I have yet to meet any "veteran players" with whom I can find a good emotional connection/friendship... again, probably because I'm kind of a reclusive/hermetic basketcase in my own right
But hey - you have an orange name, indicating veteran and premium status, sooooo - I will ask you to PM me a server that you think someone older, grouchy and picky like me might enjoy... if you have any
I am attempting to be creative in MC, but I lack the "courage" or maybe it's that I just plain lack a vision - I don't know.... to see some grand build in my mind and just start placing blocks in hopes of making it a reality. Instead, I tend to want to recreate reality - Taco Bell for example... and then I go to YT and watch a tutorial.
I do wish I could envision some magical/unique build and make it on my own, but - I'm not able to do that right now... maybe - in the future - who knows
I have dreams of building Stormwind, but I am far enough in my MC learning experience to know that:
1. It's been done already
2. To do it properly, I would need a full team of friends who also wanted to do it
3. I attempted it with someone else already and we spent more time arguing on size/perspective than anything else
You mention opening up a vanilla survival world and inviting friends.... and I won't lie, I have considered it - but I am more of a worker bee than an admin. That would require mucho commitment, and quite frankly, I don't have the ability or knowledge to admin a server properly.
Let me guess, you want a community that chats "Chuck Norris laughs when his nose itches. heheeh haha LLOL". The Minecraft community isn't like that. I find the Minecraft community a lot more mature and willing to help with things like learning how to play on their server and such. I used to play WoW and the trade chat in cities was just totally immature. I have happily left WoW for Minecraft.
Let me guess, you want a community that chats "Chuck Norris laughs when his nose itches. heheeh haha LLOL".
My brother, you managed to take your response in a complete 180 of what the main posted was talking about...
For OP, I hated the Minecraft community, since everyone was always either secluded in their own corner of the map or they were immature and flocked into one massive poorly built commune. I suppose you just learn to deal with it? I'm not gonna tell you to go be one of the segregated weirdos, but it's usually easier than trying to find someone else...
Also, running a server for vanilla isn't hard at all! If you run it through a hosting site like Nodecraft you can run a fair sized server of friends (I personally do a heavily modded two or three person at a time server) for pretty cheap too, as long as you have a regular source of income keeping the costs up won't be hard at all, especially if you have 2-3 people to chip in to the costs. In most cases it's as easy as picking a few options on the website and hitting the "start" button and it'll load your server right up, do all the maintenance it needs etc.
Another potential suggestion is playing with mods. For a few years I got really burnt out playing Minecraft Multiplayer, and I moved on to playing mod packs like Tekkit or Resonant Rise. These helped me get along on Singleplayerfor much, much longer since there's so much more to learn and play around with. The only problem with this is you might not be able to run them well if you don't have a well built PC.
No I don't ever read all the texts that go to one posts because if I did that for each thread it could take me hours on threads. I honestly am not choosing to waste my time. (End of me posting here; no use)
EDIT: I said that because I have something called a life away from these forums. I prefer talking to family rather than strangers. If your going to critize me on how much time I should spend on the forums; Forget it. I am not wasting more than 30 mins on these forums.

You say you don't have time to read a post (the first post at that!) yet you spent the time to write a comment, something that takes significantly more time to do? Seems a little bit silly considering the small size of this thread.
Back to original topic, overall I find large multiplayer servers more trouble than they are worth(Except for mini-game servers, in that case the larger the better!). To many rules and restrictions to prevent griefers combined with chat spam it quickly becomes tedious. Small servers with friends and SSP is really the way to go!
I am attempting to be creative in MC, but I lack the "courage" or maybe it's that I just plain lack a vision - I don't know.... to see some grand build in my mind and just start placing blocks in hopes of making it a reality. Don't worry so much what something looks like and just build it! You don't need to worry if something is upload worthy quality or not. I remember the funnest world I played on was full of plain buildings and a floating railway system that covered the map. All in all it looked terrible, but had such a blast making it I didn't really care! Its Minecraft, just have Fun!

Do you love Skyblock maps. Try [Skyblock] Infinite!
All items are renewable, with artificial structures (Witch hut, Ocean monument and a Nether Fortress).
In general I've found Minecraft multiplayer is not cooperative. Everyone is an island unto themselves and any cooperative game play is usually casual in nature. I'm sure there are exceptions, but generally no. Most play multiplayer to be able to chat or network resources they need while doing their own thing.

Thank you to the actual legitimate responses... and yeah, I guess just because I mention WoW and trade in the same post, that must be because I'm a silly 12- year old boy (neither age nor gender are correct, not that it matters cause everyone is apparently a dude in Minecraft, which works for me
I tend to not enjoy modded MC cause I don't feel like I have even mastered vanilla, so to move forward seems like the person who skips to Draenor and buys their free 100, never learning anything about the WoW classes/leveling (sorry for all the WoW references, but I'm lacking other experiences overall)
I won't lie - I don't think I *could* be a great coop builder because I'm so independently me and I tend to not "work well with others", so I understand that a lot of people don't work well on MPS. I honestly just want the MPS for the chat aspect in hopes that *maybe* I'd find someone with similarities to me (age, interests other than MC, etc) and then maybe we could attempt to play or hang out - but yeah, I dunno... There are so many things I wish I could change about those larger servers, but obviously that's not gonna happen, so - I will continue to troll the forums in hopes that another new 18+ server pops up that maybe, just maybe I will decide works well for me for longer than a week

Got it, you're one of -Those- people. I have a rather lucrative career and a host of friends outside of the Internet, but I suppose I'm just blessed with the 30 extra seconds it takes to read three paragraphs in their entirety. By bad.
I am also a recluse,so much so,infact that I cant handle servers,or anyone else,so what I did was just build a singleplayer survival and with the 1.9 combat its pretty fun.Introduce a few mods here and there and It gets really fun.If you manage to make your own fun you will have a great time.Anything from trying to build a hole the size of 4 villages or building a cobble wall to keep the mobs out, maybe even fully decking yourself out in full enchanted diamond.I know I already said it but the modding community provides some really fun singeplayer action.Sorry though,I cant be much help in terms of multi player.I do have one suggestion though you could try posting it somewhere on the forums, but set some restrictions like age, maturity, interests, etc.
hope this helps <3
Edit:Also doing the survival singeplayer thing, with or without some goals can help you understand the game ALOT better
Edit 2:Alot of small servers, especially modded ones in my experience hold alot of veterans/mature people, its not 100%(nothing is) but they are a great place to make friends(in my experience)Oh and by small I mean the usual small not,the server just started 1 hour ago and we need staff, nothing to do and ran by a 12 year old.I ran into one of those once, that 10 year old hound just kept calling the 1 girl who joined his girlfriend, when I intervened he banned me XD

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
