I was reading in the gamepedia about mob grinders etc, and it talks about one
"Another tactic is to place water on a higher area so it is flowing. Put your hole at the end of the water. I recommend doing this in a large row, and inside a completely dark building so mobs will spawn even in daytime. You will need a separate shaft connected to it in order to retrieve the dropped supplies. This is advantageous because it will work by itself 24/7 and is fairly simple to build. Once completed, all you have to do is look for stuff on occasion. You do not have to watch and wait for a mob to walk into place, and this works with any mob, even ones that can fly."
How come the block distance doesn't apply to this one? Everything I've heard about mobs is that you have to be within a certain distance for them to spawn.
If that's the case, then the mobs that you find in caves etc, they don't spawn till you show up?
Yes, it is true that mobs only spawn when the player is within a certain distance. Yes, it is true that mobs in caves only spawn when a player is close. I don't know what that article was saying.

Naturally spawning aggressive mobs spawn in a large sphere within 128 blocks all around the player, but they can't spawn within 24 blocks of the player.
So as long as the trap is completely within 128 block range of where you are, and you aren't within 24 blocks of where they need to spawn within the trap the trap should work as long as your design is correct. Just be aware that there is currently a spawning bug in 1.8 and 1.9 where if your view distance setting is below 10 mob spawning will be drastically reduced.
Hi me again.
