I always found the hiome size in Minecraft unsatisfactory and so I was at first happy when the large biomes option was added.
Unfortunately it seems to make the worlgen absolutely worthless, generating ridiculous amounts of empty biomes while not changing, or if anything decreasing the size of all other biomes.
And even for those biomes that now fill 90% of the entire world their size has not been increased, they only have been made much more frequent, so the entire map is usually just two different biomes alternating.
And while now we have so many biomes, many of them being just space filler large biomes is somehow creating way less biomes than ever before.
When I have a world with forests, deserts, plains and an ocean and pick large biomes, I expected to get large forests, large deserts, large plains and a large ocean, not a checkerboard of small plains and deserts with a tiny forest surrounded by 90% ocean with dozens of exactly the same island.
Now I have only been using large biomes for a while, because I basically thought "This sucks, but normal biomes is not gonna be any better"
But is that correct? Or are normal biomes biomes actually larger than large biomes and most of all more reasonable and diverse?
I think I will not use large biomes ever again.
...then this and the laggy and immobile horses, the desynching boats, the near-useless and buggy maps... Minecraft 1.8 seems like an unplayable broken mess to me right now. Nothing is working right.
The large biomes world option increase the size of each biome by 16. This includes technical biomes like beaches, hills, mutations, etc. Personally I don't use it because the biomes are simply too big.
Use the customized option instead. You can manually set the biome size to whatever you want (within game restrictions) as well as adjust other things.
And regarding boats, they're completely redone and fixed for 1.9.
In my opinion, the large biomes doesn't really make much of a difference, so i don't usually use it. I don't use it in survival because there aren't enough types of above ground resources.

I personally haven't had many issues with horses that make them disfunctional. The main issue I can think of is when you're riding whilst generating new terrain, which is resource intensive and causes lag. That's always been around and I don't think that can be fixed without re-working on the terrain generator works.

That makes horses near-useless.
Nobody wants to ride a horse when it causes the game to freeze for one second every 3 seconds...depending on render distance(32=horses just stop working)

32 render distance isn't meant to be playable by any means, even the devs have admitted this in the past. It's too much for the internal server. Even if you get a decent framerate, the tickrate is going to fall behind like a slug, which causes things like horse lag, block lag, mob lag, etc. If you want the game to remain stable you shouldn't ever go higher than a render distance of 16 (the game's original max render distance) unless you got some beefy hardware.

Sounds like stuff that's basically on your end...

Yeah, that guy in the avatar is me. I'm *that* strange. It happens. Sometimes people act like that. Just go with it. I can offer help with suggestions even before you post them - NOT make your suggestions - but help you with them.

Didn't attempt to. I only use 32 when I am on a mountain and want to look into the distance, normally I use 12 oir 8, but 4 is just how much horses can handle without ruining the game.

Based on this, it sounds like your computer may not quite be up to par with Minecraft's requirements. I would try using Optifine. And about large biomes, you can make biomes larger like said before in the presets. You can make it larger than the slider's max by finding the value in the long line of conditions on the top of your screen in the preset menu and changing it to fit your needs.
One use large biomes has is building. When you find a boime you like, you don't have to worry about ugly biome borders. But I think custom worlds have replaced this, you can set the biome for the entire world.
